i'll be heading to OKC at the end of march and will be in Huntsville end of june/early july... i know the current facility manager will be on detail in DC for at least six months so he won't be there when i arrive in Huntsville, but was wondering if anyone was familiar with the current controllers etc there... thanks!

Auburn,

I'm one of the controllers at HSV, we are a 100% NATCA facility (thanks to Ray Palmer, which should set off warning bells). Email me your cell number and I'll give you a call or I'll have Steve (NATCA rep) call you to answer your questions. When you get down to the academy you will hear about a NATCA meet and greet, make an effort to attend, the guys there will answers a lot of your questions that you will have after listening to the FAA propaganda.

Currently we are dying for additional bodies that can certify, which means we are doing six day workweeks and a lot of 10 hour days. The facility is open from 0600 to 2400, your classroom training will take about a month, basically how fast you go through the classroom phase is up to you. The average time to fully certify has exceeded two years, everyone is different so some trainees take longer and some take less time.

If you need any help locating an apartment, etc. let me know. I currently rent at the Overlook ($474 for a one bedroom) off of Sparkman and University which is next to UAH and about a 15 minute drive to the tower.
