Monterey Peninsula - MRY
Posted: 03-21-2009, 08:56 PM

Is anybody on here currently working there, or has worked there? I have been assigned that airport in my TOL and I am awaiting an academy start date, and any information anyone might have about the facility and the area would be of great use. Thanks.

P.S. Housing in this area on a Level 5 salary is a bit disheartening

You could always live in Salinas and drive to work.

I've looked into Salinas, but from what I hear it's full of migrant farm workers. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but Monterey looks like such a better option. However, the commute would not be to bad (20-25 mins)...

which is why Salinas is a viable choice. it's pretty cheap for California, especially near the monterey peninsula.

of course Monterey is worlds nicer than Salinas. it's also home to multi-million dollar homes and pebble beach. the peninsula is freakin beautiful. but $$$.

I used to work contract out of Salinas, It's pretty ghetto out there. If you look by the mall you should be fine but a block in the wrong direction then your screwed. We were making a lot more at SNS than a D2 or even a D3 is gonna make at MRY so be careful about where you shack up at. The best thing I can tell you is hit up Craigslist and look up the looking for roomate section. MRY has it's own dedicated page, and there are some good deals in town. It also might help you meet people.

GLF5 I pm'd you with some questions.

Jake, I think you are right about Salinas. Did you live in Monterey, PG, or Carmel when you were out there?

Just came from DLI there. We(military) were not allowed to live in Salinas, as it has one of the highest murder rates per capita in the country. Serious gang wars go on there. It was referred to as Little Baghdad. I lived in PG, but I payed 850 per month for a room with a bath and kitchen. Craigslist is the best way to go, lots of people needing roommates, but if you want anything just for you get ready to pay 1200 per month and higher. It's very foggy alot there and the approach into the airport looks interesting to say the least. I always noticed the lights on HIGH!! Beautiful area, just tooo California for me if you know what I mean.

Little Baghdad, great that sounds beautiful.

Well with a wife and a two year old I was hoping for something a little safer, so Salinas might be a no go. However, I will probably need atleast, 2-3 bedrooms, which will make my rent significantly higher in Monterey/PG...ughh
