Hillsboro Tower - HIO
Posted: 05-05-2009, 04:42 AM

I am going to be working here after OKC. I was wondering if anyone out there has heard anything about Hillsboro Tower, good or bad, that they will share? Apparently I am really lucky to be going here? It is (according to the controllers there) one of the best places to go. Has anyone else heard this?

-Josh

I've heard good things about HIO and I like the area. Have you taken a tour yet? I will be taking a tour there on the 14th of May....

you are lucky, it was one of my top choices. HIO should be a good place to start and you have Portland Tower and Tracon nearby to transfer to in the future and you wouldn't have to move

After taking my tour, I actually didnt like the facility at all. Probably because I like enjoy radar and Hillsboro is NOT radar certified, so they just use the "one in and one out" policy.
It is a level seven and is not busy at all. However, they are putting in a new runway and maybe that will help. You should be checked out within a few months.
Suggestions: know helicopter phrasology! (lots of copters) Know how to read a flight progress strip clearance, because that is what you will be doing on ground.
I hope you have patience, because over 60% of the traffic are students and most of the students from asia. They can speak some english, but at times it can be hard to understand and be understood.
Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Being a current controller at Hillsboro (HIO) I can tell you it may have slow times in the winter, it is most definantly not slow. Our manager just got the word, we were the busiest tower in Oregon. I believe last year we had some 260,000 ops.
