Nobody is to say what could have happened had the controllers been able to get a location of the guy. Nobody can say that they couldnt have been able to vector him to a more suitable area to make an emergency landing. At 1650 PST, what were the sky conditions
Did the pilot have any physiological impairments, like weather or a sunset to impact his decision making
Clearly the pilot stated he was "going down" and was in distress.
Who is to say what could of happened
Assuming that the pilot told someone else, as the FAA spokesman suggested as rationale for the supervisor, or that another controller sees a situation is a ATC basic no-no. Hell, we got another brief on it today. The supervisor should be fired and tried of negligence. The family should sue the
out of the FAA. Yet again, we chalk another death up to FAA incompetence.
...I'm just shocked that the FAA didn't have the audacity to pull another Philadelphia stunt and say that any ZOA controller who felt that was unsafe should look for a new profession.

What gets me is, the FAA is saying an aircraft transmitting in distress is a distraction
What
So the next time i dial 9-1-1 i expect the operator to tell me to stop bothering them
