Posted: 08-17-2009, 09:14 PM

Attached above is the PDF summary of the contract for AFSS Specialists.

This is a 3 year contract with 3% wage increases each year. Employees will still receive vacation at the same rate yearly, but the cap for all employees will be 320 hours. The company will pay 75% of health premiums for 2009-2011 and pay 70% in 2012. Vision and dental will be 50%. Seniority will be FAA or company date. Employees will get a $1000 lump sum bonus this fall. CODA contributions will be 4% for all employees. For those unfamiliar with flight service, Level 1 specialists are trainees and level 2 specialists are fully certified.

I'm sure most are pleased with the outcome and they'll gladly take the money, but you still have those that are against the union.

Congrats on the contract. It looks good for you guys.

Did the FAA holdovers get any raises or are they capped out?

Have you heard anything else about the back-pay?

Money really wasn't an issue for the majority of people. I suppose the attitude for most is that it is an acceptable contract and they will vote yes. We didn't lose anything in the contract. In fact most things stayed exactly the same, but we did get some improvements. I give the bargaining unit credit and think they did a good job. Our bargaining team was mainly newer employees that were fairly young in age going up against veteran high level Lockheed executives. They stood strong and didn't give in to a lot of apparent outrageous company proposals.

There are veteran people from the FAA that are above the pay cap and they really won't get much from the contract. Like in any contract there will be things some like and don't like, and some that like and hate the contract.

The union definitely got us way better health coverage than we were going to have next year which was one of my major concerns. The company wanted to put us on some crap high deductible plan with no co-pays plus increase our premiums.

Yeah, I noticed the the medical coverage was a HUGE improvement. I couldn't believe how crappy the medical benefits were and I damn sure couldn't believe they wanted to make it worse. The higher 401k match is another nice improvement. The old 2% thing was crap! For those that don't care much about the money, at least union dues are basically free, plus some extra pocket change.

I'm still interested in the back pay issue. I have recently heard a rumor about also paying the lay-offs the 1 year remaining on the first contract with the FAA because of some stipulation of not closing any facilities the first half of the contract. I have my doubts about this second half though. Has there been any info on this front?

We haven't received any word yet on the back pay issue, but hopefully we will soon. I attached the complaint that the IAM filed. I didn't hear about the back pay for there being no site closers the first 5 years. Things don't look good for the C-sites though. It is scary, because we cannot keep up with things as it is. The C-sites do almost all the weather briefings and we don't have the people or equipment to pick up the slack if we lose them.

Seems like a good contract for the most part. I am wondering if they plan to hire back, or hire any new employees. I have been waiting to see if they are going to post any new positions, but from what I read in the posts, it seems they may still layoff? Anyone have any news on that front?

With the union now in, laid off employees will have first recall rights in the event that more people are needed. We lost around 200 people last year and may lose up to another 200 through next year. Some of those people don't want to come back and some have retired. There will likely still be people that will want to come back though given the chance. This could slow the hiring of brand new employees a bit.
