Any older or retired FSS guys out there?

Hi Folks,

My Father, who recently passed away, used to work at the FYV FSS until approximately 1982. At the time, they had a life insurance program that was called ATBA. This insurance program is now defunct.

Does anyone know if there was any fund set up to make residual claims against or perhaps legal action against the insurors?

Just grasping at straws, here trying to help my Mom. Any help would be appreciated.

Not to my knowledge. When a member passed away, each member mailed 5.00 to the fund which paid the family the amount totaled. There was never a positive balance in the fund, except when someone died. Sorry

Have you found out anything more about the ATBA?? We are in a similar situation with a family member. Much appreciated....

The Great Lakes and I believe the Central Regions of the FAA use to (they still may) have what they called the "Mutual Aid Program". As someone mentioned each member pledged to give $5 each and every time an active member of the MAP died (regardless of circumstances). What this meant to the familes was approximately $12,000 to $15,000 cash (yes it was actually checks) arriving within weeks of the members death.

The Mutual Aid Pledge was an awesome system, that each FAA employee of those regions was given an opportunity to join, and it often provided much needed income to those families who had suffered a loss and was having to deal with all the expenses of burying a loved one.

If you are in a Region that offers this program, JOIN, the assistance you provide a family is well worth it.

That sounds exactly like the ATBA program that my Dad participated in. Sounds great when it works. Not so great when it doesn't. My Dad payed thousands of dollars into it over his career only to have it disbanded a short time before his death.

Based on my family's experience, I suggest that a person simply buy a small life insurance policy.
