    Re: Air Force Assignment Locations

My first assignment in the USAF was Yokota AB in Tokyo Japan. Incredible 3 years!

If you have to stay stateside I recommend Tyndall, Eglin or Nellis.

I got Davis AFB on Tuscon, AZ....what do you guys think about this base, in terms of things to do in and around the base, as well as the amount of traffic for that airport there.

I hear Davis-Monthan is really slow these days...but at least you'll be close to Phoenix....

Not sure about the traffic but I know that's the main A10 base for the USAF, might also have some C130s, a single runway, TRACON provides approach service and I think the Tucson airport is nearby and is class C. You'll probably end up learning a lot and learning things some people don't get to see or deal with. I'm sure it could always be worse and you'll probably end up having a good time.

Tuscan sucks mostly, but U of A definitely provides some ah, entertainment. Also Phoenix is only 2 hours away and is an absolute blast, and as a former ASU student LOTS of entertainment to be had there. You can be in Cali in 4ish hours, Vegas 6 hours north of Phoenix, and snowboarding in Cali and northern Az. I don't know anything about the traffic or base though.

Heard nothing but awesome stories from some friends of mine that have been to Luke and visited the Tempe and ASU area, makes me quite jealous lol

    Re: Air Force Assignment Locations

Congrats Todd on getting ATC. I read this thread because I am pretty much where you were when you started this thread. I just booked my #1 job ATC in the USAF. I already completed the two year CTI program and pretty much just got tired of waiting on the FAA (being that I graduated almost 2 years ago) so I decided to enlist. I'm not too worried about the technical school since I've learned it before, but do you have any advice to help me through the process up to the point where you are currently? I leave for BMT October 15th. My dad served 8 years as a controller in the AF and he was initially stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB. He is still an ATCer for the FAA, so I am basically following in his footsteps now.

I am now looking at possible assignment locations. I was thinking Yokota AFB would be sweet or even Alaska if they let me go overseas as a 3-rate. Stateside I am still unsure where I'd want to go.

I agree 100%. Also worth mentioning is tower getting all the good TDY's, and from my experience it is easier to talk management into letting you go downstairs then vice versa. But that's just my $.02

The AF doesn't care where you want to go. The dream sheet they have you fill out is a wast of time and not looked at. There were 20 people in my class when orders came down. Three of them got Nellis two of them didn't even have it on their sheet and one had it last. I had it first on mine and ended up in Texas (go figure). Unless you get DG its what they want not what you'd like.

    Sorry

Davis-Monthan AFB isnt too bad. single runway with A10s and F16's. They run A LOT of border patrol out of there too(citation jets and Blackhawk helicopters). Seasonally they get "snow birds" which is a squadron of jets who temporarily fly out of DMA since the weather is good. I believe its the only Class C airspace that the USAF has, only because its like 4 miles from Tucson International Airport. TUS has the largest squadron of Air National Guard F16s in the nation and they routinely do approaches there at DMA.

As for Tucson itself... its OK. kinda odd since its a really big city, yet there's never anything to do. Youll find yourself driving 1.5 hrs to Phoenix from time to time to do things.
