Questions about age and getting out of the AF.
Posted: 02-15-2010, 09:49 PM Hello all, I'm fairly new to Stuck Mic and I know ya'll get these questions all the time. With that said, here's my situation. I will have just turned 30 if I get out in Oct. 2011 when my enlistment is up. I'm very concerned about the 31 age requirement and I'm not sure I understand the ins and outs of the age requirement. Obviously I understand that its a huge risk getting out being 30 but I also know that the military is getting old for me. I've got three CTOs and I also recently got my first RAPCON SEI. I feel like I've got a fairly strong resume but as I said before the age thing is my only deterrent. If anyone has suggestions or advice it will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Questions about age and getting out of the AF.
Posted: 02-15-2010, 10:40 PM Age is the only factor. Read a few threads here and see how long it is taking. I'm retired mil..Applied July 09, School May 10...There is a chance you could make it but it's not bloody likely...If you do punch consider DoD or contract.

I'm about 90% on getting out and DoD or contract is my back up. When did you start hearing back after you sent your application in, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks for the reply.

Re: Questions about age and getting out of the AF.
Posted: 02-15-2010, 10:49 PM I think the RMC application process is a bit different. I applied July and had a TOL in August. Keep in mind I was able to go to a PEPC and that was huge. If you could get your TOL it does freeze your age, if your dead set on getting out why does it matter? Just apply for FAA, DoD, and contract.

Re: Questions about age and getting out of the AF.
Posted: 02-15-2010, 11:20 PM The VRA route will definitely help. The "good" news is that your age will be frozen once you receive your temporary offer letter (TOL). That usually takes 5-9 months. You probably won't get into the FAA for a year, maybe less.
The race would be to get to your TOL before 31. There's no doubt that it'll be a risk. They are still hiring VRAs at the normal rate. If your picky on the facility, or state, then it would be a bigger risk than just getting in. |

Re: Questions about age and getting out of the AF.
Posted: 02-15-2010, 11:21 PM I think you should try if you truly want to do it... After 31 you wont get another opportunity. If it doesnt work out there is always DOD, federal contract or even re-entering the USAF. Its really not that hard.
All you need is a tentative offer letter and your age is locked. With a CTO and military experience you will be at the top of the list, especially as a VRA applicant. The only problem is that the FAA has slowed their hiring... if they resume hiring in time you should be golden. If they take too long with this current "freeze" it may screw you. EDIT:You beat me to it Roddy, lol... BTW: ease up with the flow to LAS. Its making me work harder! |
