I am going into the air force after 5 years as an Army ATC. I leave in a couple months and I am just wondering about which Air Force posts have the best living situations for families: parks, recreation, sports, etc. I would also like to know what type of ATC facilities they have on these posts.

will you have to go through the air force tech school, or does your training in the army suffice?
if you have to go through air force training for ATC then you will not get to pick your base unless you're top of your class.
also pretty much any base will have activities in the area, if not on base.

Im sure you will have to go through the AF tech school(down in keesler and lots of fun). Ive been in for a few years now and theres a tower every base you go to. Not some little mobile tower, an actual tower every BASE you go to. And yea get used to calling them base's not post. Yea i jsut went to an air traffic leaders conference and holy crap does the army run air traffic jacked up. good luck man

CHK,
I'll second that the Army runs traffic jacked up, weird, etc., I'm at an army FOB in Afghanistan and the pilots make B52 patterns look small,, and have no concept of standard ATC procedures.

Congrats on seeing the light my little brother is Army ATC and lets just say there really is more to Air Traffic than helicopters. The AF side isn't bad I have been in 5 years at McGuire in NJ. The base is in no mans land -at least as out there as you can get in NJ- but there is a lot to do if your willing to drive. McGuire isn't bad brand new base housing if you want to live on base. If not be prepared to spend $$$ it can be very expensive just depends on what your used too. Air Traffic wise we used to be very busy now days with all the budget cuts its pretty dead the RAPCON is still pretty complex because theyr'e smashed in between NYC Philly and Washington and their airspace is choppy. But like Chkwheelsdwn said you will prob have to go to Keesler in Mississippi then hard telling the AF doesn't get to pick bases. Good Luck

Anyone have info on AF ATC as a reservist or guard? Is it easy to pick up extra days around the unit or strictly 1 weekend a month? I know the easiest way to find out is to call the units but if anyone has any info please share.
