Want to go AF ATC and i just took my asvab
Posted: 07-15-2010, 04:27 PM

I scored a 97 Mech, 97 Elec, 93General, and 91 A. I only want to do ATC. Can i get it guaranteed? How should I go about this? I had 1 moral waiver for having a child out of wedlock. Any advice would be appreciated.

Nothing in life is guaranteed, sonny. I got offered to be a Naval submarine engineer due to my ASVAB score (98th percentile or something stupid like that). I wanted to fly planes in the Navy. You can guess where I ended up.

Going to college and getting an education because I wouldn't believe a word the military tells me. Some of these others might (will) disagree with me, but I have a hard time believing somebody whenever they've got me by the balls. Nothing in life is guaranteed.

You can get it guaranteed in writing..... it can be a pain... depending on the recruiter.. but don't ever let them tell you otherwise.. they CAN give you what you want and put it in writing...

Also, you have to be an officer ( college grad ) to fly planes.... except in the army.. you can fly helicopters as a warrant officer.... maybe that's why they wouldn't let you...

Basically tell them I want ATC or I'm going somewhere else. There's a forum about this somewhere already, but you can get it 100% guaranteed in writing. I don't know that the AF has an age cutoff, but as you probably know the FAA cutoff is 31.

You needed to score over 110 in your tech scores to get ATC in the AF

Those were basically my same scores and I only wanted ATC. I put other jobs down as well but ATC was number one. They are hurting so bad right now. It's hard for them to keep us in because so many get out after one enlistment. You're not guaranteed to get the job but you have a big change of getting it. Even if it comes back and they gave you a different job you can back out of it.

What some have overlooked (most info is right on) is "How long are you willing to wait to get a guaranteed slot?" Recruiters push what they need most - it's "top down" driven, what the AF needs is what is hot/open.

I agree with "get it in writing/guaranteed" but have not talked to a recruiter lately and would be guessing as to what CAN be guaranteed in the CURRENT environment. Usually the recruiters and the recruiting command can only look ahead 9-12 months and are focused on filling those known billets...you may have to wait more than a year to get what you want and all those slots may ACTUALLY be filled for the next year at the school house (Keesler?).

I would want to see age limits in writing, once you clear that doubt up...stick to your guns - that you want ATC and are willing to wait or look elsewhere!
