I am a Military Controller that needs guidance!!
Posted: 02-01-2011, 04:15 PM

Hello, I am currently a military controller. My passion is to get hired by the FAA to be an Air Traffic Controller. I have my " pink card ", but have no ratings or actual experience. I am willing to go through whatever I have to to get qualified for employment through FAA. So, I would very much appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. I am 23 years old, so I figured its a perfect time for me to start. Any suggestions? Thanks guys....

I would go with getting your military ratings.

What branch are you in? I don't know much about the other branches outside the USAF. But I would think you must have some sort of position rating. I have heard Navy guys having a hard time using their boat quals but I think it is possible to use them.

Im in the National Gaurd. It is hard to get a rating, unless I deploy. I want to deploy, but i dont want to have to wait til then to get any type of ratings or training. I am considering going CTI, but I would like to get a CTO somehow if possible.

Move over to a different branch, get your ratings and then apply FAA. Or use your free money for school and get a CTI degree and apply that way. Keep pushing to get some sort of rating though the guard. They send people everywhere to do those kinds of things. Look into augmenting some of the units that do deploy. There are all sorts of things you can do to make yourself more marketable.

That makes no sense at all. You can't deploy as a controller without having ratings. You're not going to get sent to Iraq to train. And as retarded as the military can be, I seriously doubt they sent you through tech school for a job that the unit can't provide training and mobilization for. And that pink card is meaningless.

With all do respect MJ0730, that doesnt make any sense at all. You can deploy without a rating. As a matter of fact, thats how a couple of guys in my unit got their CTO. SSgt Young, you have a good point. I have looked into transferring to the AAF to work fixed base so I can get my CTO. I figured if I had my CTO with the pink card that would help me out a lot. It is hard these days to switch branches though...

O.K. That explains a lot of your comments and clears up a lot. You may not like my suggestion but I would take a look at CTI schools or trying to get on active duty with the Army. You might get your CTO in the Army but I wouldn't count on it. If you do get your CTO with the Guard, and you complete CTI school you will have three applications to apply for: CTI/CTO/VRA.

I noticed your other thread about the CTO, search this site for LINK and Advanced Aviation (I think), not seen anything good come from those yet.....
