Looking to become an ATC
Posted: 06-14-2012, 03:59 PM Okay, here's my situation. I'm 26, have attended some college (47 credits), and I have a background in public safety. I'm looking to go in a different direction with my life, so I've turned to the Air Force.
Initially I wasn't too sure what I wanted to do. Recruiter told me to pick four jobs and a general area of interest, so I came up with ATC, Imagery Analysis, Network Intel, and AG. Thus far, I've taken the ASVAB (M/A/G/E = 85/88/92/88, AFQT = 90), went through all the medical BS at MEPS, and am currently waiting for a waiver on what the military docs thought was a rash but turned out to be nothing (like I told them). Shouldn't be long before I'm allowed to speak with a career counselor and sign my contract. The thing is, the more I read about ATC, the more certain I am that THIS is what I want to do, PERIOD. The recruiter has told me time and time again that I can't be guaranteed a single job. But from reading some of the posts here, I gather that's not entirely true. So, my questions: First off, am I decent candidate for ATC? Next, are ATCs even in demand right now? Last, what can I do to ensure that I get the job? |

Re: Looking to become an ATC
Posted: 06-15-2012, 03:30 AM scores are not THAT important, but its good to see you are not a dumbass. I got high 90's, my trainer got high 60's. We are both quality controllers.
IDK what the AF recruiting is like now adays, but go for it, atc is fun... and its nice to have a job in the AF where the rules are restrictive so they dont f you and put you on 12hr days |

Re: Looking to become an ATC
Posted: 06-15-2012, 07:10 AM Your recruiter is full of s@%t, you can be guaranteed a job! I wouldn’t sign anything until you are. I'm in the AF now (ATC) and have been for 6 years on my way out for the FAA. Personally this is the best job I could have ever asked for. As for you being the right candidate? Unfortunately that is something that can only be answered by you. We have many people come through extremely book smart that can’t talk to planes. On the flip side we have complete morons that are the best controller’s I’ve seen. Just so you know, if you join the AF you have to do a 6 year commitment to be ATC. That puts you over the age limit for the FAA, if that’s something you were looking to transition into. If you have any more questions about the AF, training, or ATC feel free to PM me.

Re: Looking to become an ATC
Posted: 06-15-2012, 09:58 PM Make the military a career for 20 or so years. Receive retirement pay. Then, if you want, go to a contract facility or the DOD and get a second retirement started.
If I am unable to get a CTO before I hit 31 years of age, that'll have to be the route I go as well. |
