To all Reserve/Guard Unit members...
Posted: 02-09-2009, 02:24 PM Can anyone tell me what the deal is with the hiring process in conjunction with Reserve Duty/Active Duty? If I were to be away at training on active duty and were offered a facility, what would happen? I'm CTI by the way. Thanks.

Re: To all Reserve/Guard Unit members...
Posted: 02-09-2009, 03:22 PM Actually it happened to me. I did my interview one week before I went on active duty for a deployment to Iraq. Received my TOL while I was in Kuwait and just emailed the HR lady who sent it to me and informed her that I would accept the position offered but that I was currently deployed. She informed me that would be no problem, they just notated it in my records and I just need to make contact with her when I get home. Make sure you follow up if this happens to you tho, cause a couple months later I got a notice saying they were pulling my offer due to a lack of a response, but I just contacted her again and everything finally got figured out.
As far as I know they cannot pull an offer from you for federal service, once you have an offer you should be golden. |

Posted: 02-09-2009, 03:24 PM No shit....I was told that if I got an offer while at training I would have to turn it down and just cross my fingers for another offer.

Re: To all Reserve/Guard Unit members...
Posted: 02-09-2009, 03:32 PM Yeah I was royally pissed off when I received the offer, I've been trying to get in for like 2 years, and of course it happens when I'm going to be gone for a year.
All I did was let the HR rep know what was going on and she said that was cool, I was relieved. |

Oh that's bullcrap. They've been holding an offer for a guy in my unit for well over a year now, and he's been back in the states for like 7 months. They will hold your offer.

That's really good to hear if I decide to join a Guard/Reserve Unit. I wish I had known this before....I would've accepted my 4-year full tuition ROTC scholarship.

Re: To all Reserve/Guard Unit members...
Posted: 02-09-2009, 11:36 PM It happened to me as well. I am in the Ohio Guard as a Blackhawk pilot and am currently deployed to Iraq. I got my TOL in May of 08 and accepted a class date for 19 NOV 08. Next thing I know, guess what...time to build sand castles. So I called HR and they were very cool about it. I sent them my orders and said to call them when I get back. I will probably call them around November though because I know I will probably have to retake some medical testing. I would like to try and get a class date scheduled then for ASAP after I return due to lack of employment. Its funny because I will have been in the Guard just over 8 years by the time I get back and will have 5 years of title 10 active duty. Between schools and deployments it just never ends. 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year baby! Ha, I enjoy it though.

Re: To all Reserve/Guard Unit members...
Posted: 02-10-2009, 08:59 AM rewgupko: That's awesome though. I was going to go through the helicopter training program here at UND, but my eyes aren't 20/40 uncorrected. I'm kind of in a bind here mentally. Well let me start off by saying that I want to join a reserve branch simply because I feel the need to serve my country. I don't have any need whatsoever to do this. I have a couple options and I'm having a hard time figuring out what I want to do. I could get a commission as an officer in the Guard after I graduate next may, or I could enlist in the Navy Reserve under the intelligence branch and then apply for a direct commission in intelligence once I get some experience. I could also simply apply for a direct commission, but even though I have a 4.0 GPA I don't feel as if I will be competitive in the selection process because of lack of experience in intelligence and no graduate degree. The Navy training would take me no less than 7 months to complete after graduation, and I'm not quite sure about the Guard training. What do you guys recommend I do? I can also wait till my one year probationary period is up and start my training then, but I would rather get it done before I start controlling and have to worry about getting certified. The grads here at UND generally get picked up around 6 months for ATC.
