MGIB while in training???
Posted: 09-14-2009, 11:42 PM

Was wondering if anyone has used the MGIB while in the FAA? I was told that you could while your attempting to get your certification.

Thanks,
Marc

Yep, Click on the ATC Information drop-down menu to the left and you'll find GI Bill info or click this link: How to Apply for GI Bill Benefits Take Care!

The "old" (pre "9/11 MGIB") MGIB pays while in training. The new one does not. If you payed into your MGIB for the first year you were in the AF, you have the "old" one. If you never payed for the MGIB, and you are entitled to the new "post 9/11" MGIB, it does not pay for OJT the way I understand it.

Correct me if im wrong anyone..

Anyway, the new MGIB basically only pays for college classes..and you get the housing stipend if you're a full time student only.

So, if you're under the "old" MGIB, and are contemplating transferring your benefits to the new one, dont! Unless, of course, you will use it to be a full time student, or plan on transferring the benefits to a family member (whic must be done before you're out of the military BTW).

As requested, I will correct you:

You do still get the GI bill for OJT... however, there are no changes. It remains unaffected regardless if it's pre/post 9/11.

Humm I coulda sworn that new bill = NO OJT $$ (or maybe it was just reduced). Regardless, most of us VRA guys should be on the old GI BILL anyway, and in my case: IF THERE IS ANY qUESTION if the new one may or may not have ojt... well, there really is no reason to change to it.

Old Gi bill for the win.

Maybe I was confused then, my bad for that. When I inquired specifically about "post 9/11" benefits, she told me that I qualify for the OJT $$$$. She may have been basically saying "well, even though you qualify for post 9/11, you also qualify for pre 9/11, so you qualify for the benefit" (even though she only mentioned that I qualify for the OJT. Ooops!

Lo Siento
