Update on the Air National Guard Plus a few more questions....

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to give a little update. I enlisted Air National Guard on Aug 17 for Air Traffic Control. Ive had a couple drills and just got my basic and tech school date. I leave for BMT on Dec 14 for Zero Week and graduate Feb 12th. And Tech school starts March 9th and I graduate June 17.

Also, I just found out that ill be getting a CTO in the tower at my base. Which is pretty awesome! I thought i was going to have to wait to do a deployment. Plus, I can work at a contract tower.

Another note, I had a hickup with my flight physical which slowed things down, but is now all cleared up and have recently passed my flight physical!!

Im stoked that everything has worked out thus far!

Which brings me to my question: Is it me or does tech school seem a little short?? A little less than 4 months?? That sound right? These dates are straight from the paper work they just gave me.

Also, if you look at the dates theres a gap in between bmt and tech school, just about 3 weeks. Anyone know what ill be doing? Coming home for those 3 weeks? Or heading to tech school early and doing little jobs for them??

What do you think??

Four months is about right. Tech school isn't very intense, it will just give you the basics. When I went through it was Fundamental ATC then Radar OR Tower, now your going to get the Fundamentals and then a little of both. I'm not sure why theres a 3 week gap, there is RAP (recruiters assistance program... not sure if the ANG does that or not...?), Travel time, or maybe it will be rescheduled as you get closer to your grad date.

Not very intense? I was under the impression that there was a high wash out rate?

Your first chance to go home will be after tech school. For the 3 weeks between BMT and tech school you'll be on "AFI" or awaiting further instruction. AKA go clean the dorms all day.

Will I stay at Lackland AFB or will they send me to Keesler AFB to do all the cleaning? Where will I be???

You are in the Guard. Most likely, you will go back to your base in the interim but there is a possibility you will be cleaning things at Keesler or lackland instead. It is a matter of space availiable. If you will be a burden at either Lackland or Keesler while you wait for your tech school to start then you will go back to your base. Tech school washouts are generally people who decide to chase the opposite sex, underage drink or generally are screwing off instead of studying!

Which unit are you in? I am in the NC ANG. You should ask the NATCT at your unit these questions. its their job.

Im going to ask them everything at the next drill. I believe its first weekend in dec. Im 153rd air lift in cheyenne, Wy. Awesome base! Im just kinda curious, but not really in enough of a rush to call and ask, ya know?

Never heard of anyone leaving while waiting for a class. You'll be stuck at Keesler for all of that wonderful waiting. Generally everyone leaves BMT the day after graduation for their tech schools. I left the next day on a bus for Keesler.

I leave a week from today for BMT. And you guys were right, I go straight to Keesler.
