Posted: 05-03-2009, 01:47 AM

Any split ATC / Cargo Nat Guard or Reserve Pilots here?

I'm thinking about doing it... not sure yet though.

Oh... my... God...

Somebody actually posted in the Military Pilots section? I was looking at this subcat thinking that it would never... EVER get posted in. I mean, just sayin. But still.

Wow.

I am a National Guard pilot, but Army not airforce. I do think that the basics are the same though. Words of Wisdom: It is very time consuming. I have a blast but be prepared for a part time job. I average an extra work week every month (40 hrs.) easy. Not 40 hours of flight time of course, that would be too easy. 40 hours combined of flying, flight planning, and drilling. Of course you get paid for it though. You'll probably average about 100 hours per year when your not deployed.

Yeah, I'd really like to fly C17s after I become my CPC, I know it's "not that easy" but I think it'd be a blast.

How did you like the Army when you were active as a helo pilot? I was thinking about taking the plunge and seeing about landing me a helo spot; do you have to compete for an aviator spot in the Army or is it guaranteed prior to signing???

I don't know much about the Army National Guard but I do know that with the Air National Guard you are garunteed your pilot slot before you sign on, but that's why the competition is EXTREMELY high for slots like fighter jets and stuff. Now with the active Air Force you must got through OTS (Officer Training School, I know... there is already an assigned meaning for that on this forum haha) and then you get your job afterward HOPING to even get to go to flight school let alone picking your plane....not so much. That comes at the end of flight school depending on your class rank. And chances are going that route right now anyway they aren't hardly taking any fighter pilots and instead moving those people to unmanned aircraft. If the Army is anything like that if you go Guard they may be willing to guarenttee you a pilot slot but I'm sure the active Army doesn't. Hope that helps and isn't too confusing.
