IMHO, women are received the same as men. Those that can do the job are accepted. Those who can't find themselves on the street (or in manglement).
As far as training in OKC, there is a blog in another thread on this site. It also depends which school they send you to, enroute or terminal.
I don't think anything really prepares you for ATC except hands-on experience. You can learn all the rules and fundamentals from the regs but until you push tin for real, all you'll be is book smart.
Every ATCer I've ever met is a prototypical A-type. We're all assh*les, myself included. We all think we're the greatest ATCer to ever strap on a headset. We're never wrong unless we violate separation minima or we scrape tin and then that's only because we disagree with the interpretation of a particular word or sentence in previously mentioned regs. We all speak English, but profanity is the official second language. Telling someone to f*ck off has about 40 meanings to an ATCer.
