Small fire at JFK air traffic control tower
NEW YORK (AP) -- A small fire in a John F. Kennedy International Airport air traffic control tower has been put out by firefighters.
The Fire Department of New York says a section of the tower was evacuated Wednesday afternoon when a piece of cardboard in or around an air conditioning unit caught fire. The blaze did not spread, and there were no injuries.
A spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the incident was over within minutes and operations at the Queens airport were unaffected.
Kennedy is one of the nation's busiest airports. Last year it handled more than 400,000 flights and nearly 50 million passengers.
