Backround checks
Posted: 11-03-2009, 01:32 PM

Just wondering what exactly the pre screening consists of and when it takes place. I am scheduled to take my ATC SAT test next week and am curious how long after they begin checking me out (once I pass ). Also I am assuming they check work history, criminal record, and drug screen? Is this correct? Am I missing anything? thanks!!

Once you are selected you will be required to submit an OF-306 pertaining to previous work/criminal history. This tells them whether they need to assign a special investigator to you or use the run of the mill process.

Once you receive your Tentative Offer Letter (TOL), after the OF-306, you will be required to complete the E-QIP. For terminal (tower/tracon) candidates it is the federal form SF-85 (5 years-ish), and for enroute, it is the SF-86 (7 years-ish). The investigation can take up to three years to complete, but generally will be under six months.

You can Google the forms and download the blanks to see what types of questions they ask.

I for one completed the SF-86 and it was roughly 64 pages.

Background checks don't happen until AFTER panels and AFTER notification that you've been selected for further consideration. You've probably got several months until that point.

Regardless of clearance level, they will contact current and former employers, friends, roommates, etc. Credit history, criminal history and work history are all part of it.

They only do a background check if you are selected for employment.

Actually starting the job will be contingent on you passing your background check as well as being medically cleared.

Slight correction to previously posted info: the SF-85 (for terminal candidates) goes back 7 years, the SF-86 (for en route candidates) is 10 years.

I completed the SF-86 and was required to only go back 7 years.

SF-86 is for the "Secret" security clearance. This requires a 7 year check.

It might have been different at the PEPC. I just did my EQIP in Sept. and remember reading the scope of each investigation. My TOL is for terminal and I had to go back 7 years on every section.

Would it be of any benefit for me that I already have an active airport clearance through my current job and through that my criminal record has been checked. Would this possibly help to speed the process up? or will it not even matter?
