Crossing Restrictions

ATC directs me to cross XYZ VOR at FL240. Later, prior to the XYZ VOR, ATC says to descend and maintain FL200. Do I still have to cross XYZ at Fl240. I say no but I think there is confusion out there.

No, if another altitude is issued then the restriction is canceled... unless restated when the new altitude is given.

agree with what polo708 said.

NO crossing restriction at XYZ. the restriction would have to be restated if it needed to be complied with.

Yes, the crossing restriction is canceled. A crossing restriction is a pilots discretion descent, the "descend and maintain FL200" is not. As such, the pilots discretion is gone and now they must descend at a standard rate.

yep it cancels it. it ALSO would cancel the restriction if the controller said "comply with previous restriction, descend and mantain FL200" we do it all the time but its not legal!! Unless someone can prove me wrong

completely agree.

we (I) use it a lot too. but it's not a binding clearance. you have to restate the crossing restriction in order for it to an obligated crossing restriction.

I think the proper Phraso we are looking for here: N1234 cross xyz vor at FL240, then descend and M->FL200 (this would "restate" previous restriction and lead to no pilot confusion. giving PD to 240 @ xyz followed by normal rate to 200.
