Re: What would you change about phraseology?

My supe has been on me about "positive control." As a result, I've been giving absurdly stupid crossing restrictions when I know he's standing behind me. The other day I issued "cross 2-9-9 miles south of VXV at and maintain FL330." What I normally say is, "I need you level in 2 minutes or less." What you are supposed to say is, "climb/descend so as to be level at FL330 at or before time 2233, time now 2231." I issued it once to a pilot when I knew the supe was behind me. The pilot must have thought I was a moron. Anyway, giving a time hack is a waste of words and the pilots usually don't get it. We should be able to say "be level in 2 minutes" or "be out of FL330 in 2 minutes or less," because regardless of what time it is, 2 minutes from now is 2 minutes later.

So because they didn't say magic words, these aircraft were too close. If they said those words, the aircraft would be the same distance. Sometimes I hate this stuff.

I haven't been through the entire thread, but having to issue a cancellation of a landing clearance when an IFR aircraft goes missed is not part of the 7110.65.

Quote:
4-8-9. MISSED APPROACH
Except in the case of a VFR aircraft practicing an
instrument approach, an approach clearance automatically
authorizes the aircraft to execute the missed
approach procedure depicted for the instrument
approach being flown. An alternate missed approach
procedure as published on the appropriate FAA
Form8260 or appropriate military form may be
assigned when necessary. Once an aircraft commences
a missed approach, it may be radar vectored.
Given the above paragraph, the missed approach is automatically authorized, and it does not state in subsequent paragraphs anything about canceling a landing clearance if the aircraft goes missed. The sup. pushed the deal on that controller, and that wasn't the right way to do it if it was legit.

When releasing an aircraft from a satellite airport....
"clearance is void after.."
should be "RELEASE is void after.."

call me back and we'll discuss new departure instructions;
I don't want to have to re-issue the entire clearance!

I believe it was just a VFR aircraft that elected to go around and said so as well. But yes, either way it's bs.

Haha.

I think "TRAFFIC IN SIGHT" should be condensed to "TALLY-HO" because it sounds too much like "HAVE A GOOD FLIGHT."

I get what you're saying and I think you have a point.....However I like "Clearance is void" because the unambiguity of it. It tells the pilot he can't just depart 5 mins after the void time VFR and pick up the clearance while in minimum VFR. Reissuing the clearance is as simple as "(New departure instructions/release time), rest of route unchanged"

I think "(Callsign), Wilco" should be the mandatory, unless clarification is needed, response to ATC instructions when ATC is busy.

You like the wilco? Never cared much for it. It reminds me of Space Quest, though. Who's with me!

Spent most of middle school indoors... sigh
