What to say first Runway or Heading?
Posted: 08-12-2010, 08:43 PM I have been told both ways but havent found anything concrete. 3-9-9 7110.65 was as close as I could find. THought there was somewhere else that said you state the heading first then the runway. Thanks

Re: What to say first Runway or Heading?
Posted: 08-13-2010, 05:45 AM Either way you gotta listen for the readback that they get it. However, to answer your question at my tower, we issue the departure instructions (runway heading, etc.), then the runway takeoff clearance.

Re: What to say first Runway or Heading?
Posted: 08-13-2010, 08:48 AM As a general rule, I try to issue restrictions and/or additional instructions before a clearance. So, I would give the heading first. It really doens't matter too much because we are not launching space shuttles. There's going to be time to ensure the aircraft does what you told it to do and you will be listening to ensure the readback is correct.
If the controller is overly concerned about it, you don't even have to do both together. You can make the aircraft sit right where it's at and give the informatioon as a change to their clearance or as additional instructions. Follow that up with the actual takeoff clearance in a seperate transmission. |

Re: What to say first Runway or Heading?
Posted: 08-13-2010, 12:19 PM Here's what I found tell me what you think. When I looked it up some more the example doesnt allow you to put any instrcutions btw the runway and cleared for T/O. But it states that you must give an intial heading if they will be vectored immediately after departure.
5-8-2. INITIAL HEADING Before departure, assign the initial heading to be flown if a departing aircraft is to be vectored immediately after takeoff. PHRASEOLOGYFLY RUNWAY HEADING. TURN LEFT/RIGHT, HEADING (degrees). 3-9-9. TAKEOFF CLEARANCE a. When issuing a clearance for takeoff, first state the runway number followed by the takeoff clearance. PHRASEOLOGYRUNWAY (number), CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF. EXAMPLE- “RUNWAY TWO SEVEN, CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF.” |
