if your applying "maintain visual separation" to a VFR aircraft how are you meeting this requirement of 7-2-1?
"when other approved separation is assured before and after the application
of visual separation"

since the guy is see and avoid arent you completing the see portion when he reports traffic in sight.

In REF to what DOD_ATC said (7-2-1 a.) this is also true with all of you that are at Non-Appraoch Control Towers. 7-2-1 c.

in order to apply visual separation you have to either

1. tell the aircraft to "maintain visual separation.." or
2. the pilot says he'll "maintain visual separation" AND you tell him "visual separation approved."

So, the see part is excellent and all...but until you tell him to do the avoid part then you still need the required 3 minutes. visual separation by the pilot is easier than 3 minutes.

"Aircraft may be separated by visual means, as
provided in this paragraph, when other approved
separation is assured before and after the application
of visual separation."

what is your sep before, what is your sep after?

your correct. thought i was clear, but i left out the fact that the aircraft had already reported the other aircraft in sight.

after the aircraft reports the traffic in sight you either
1. tell the aircraft to "maintain visual separation..." or
2. the pilot says he'll "maintain visual separation" AND you tell him "visual separation approved."

what is your sep before, what is your sep after?
before...VFR separation
separation being reduced by visual sep...3 minutes wake turbulence
after...VFR separation

you could call it 6000 feet of runway separation instead of VFR separation if you prefer.

if your applying VFR sep before and after why bother issuing an instruction to issue it in the middle? would you use it for a departure too?

you: hold for wake turbulence
pilot: we'll waive it
you: preceding 737, maintain visual seperation from that traffic, caution wake turbulence, cleared for takeoff
