VFR on top and SVFR clearances?
Posted: 07-29-2009, 07:10 PM

Hi,

I am currently undergoing training for flight data at a TRACON facility and was just wondering if anyone here would be willing to give me one example each of a VFR on top clearance and SVFR clearance, (as they should be given by someone at the flight data position.) Please let me know if you can and thanks for any responses.

SVFR: N12345, Cleared out of the (facility) Class C surface area at or below (altitude), maintain special VFR conditions. Report exiting the class C (or D) or reaching VFR conditions.

For IFR to VFR on top, look for the threads not very far down from this one that beat that horse to death, over and over again.

Not to sound correcting, but technically, shouldn't it be:

SVFR: N12345, Cleared out of (facility) Class B/C/D surface area, maintain Special VFR condtions at or below (altitude). Report exiting class B/C/D airspace.

I don't know if I'm right... SVFR is soooo RARELY used where I'm at, so forgive me if I'm incorrect.

Heck, as long as we're doing some fine tuning... You can also use Special V for a class E surface area. The assigned "at or below" altitude must be under 10,000 MSL.

How about aircraft that are flying out of an airport in class "G" airspace? Also SVFR not allowed in class "B" right?
