Landing on a Taxiway
Posted: 08-14-2009, 10:37 PM

Question, any input appreciated:

As long as Ground control releases a parallel taxiway to Local control, can aircraft land on it in VFR weather?

IFR?

You're SOL when it comes to references. However, is there anything that says it "can't" land on the taxiway? No.

Where I used to work, we landed aircraft on taxiways all the time, but they were also considered movement areas. I'm not sure if you'd find anything that says you CAN land, but I know there's nothing that says you CAN'T as well. There may not be an air traffic reg, one way or another, but there may be an advisory circular. Check with your airport ops.

i've done it on a daily basis. the taxiway was all movement area, thus controlled. if it's a non-movement area i would not direct an aircraft to land there. if it was non-movement then i MIGHT let them if they requested it.

I hope and assume we are talking about helicopters?

The only time in my career I've been allowed to use taxiways for fixed wing aircraft was in the military and only with specific written procedures and extensive coordination.

mostly helicopters. but we had a letter with the flight schools allowing us to use a perpendicular taxiway for their fixed wing when the wind warranted it.

I don't understand. Why would a fixed wing aircraft ever want (or need) to use a parallel taxiway to take off or land instead of using the perfectly good runway next to him/her?

So you can land two trainers in parallel about seventy five feet apart. Scares the crap out of them, but man, the controllers and CFIs love it. Dirties up the seats some, though.

I have no idea what I'm talking about, really.

Someone at my old navy base had one plane trip the arresting gear (which fouls the deck), another take a trap on another runway, and two emergencies inbound. One landed on the remaining runway, and one landed on a taxiway that used to be a runway. All happened in about four minutes.
