Air Force One/Two (heavy?)
Posted: 09-04-2009, 02:32 AM Okay, since we've been beating on a dead horse regarding visual separation and what not, I figured it's time to bring up a new topic. No conflicts regarding this, I'm just bringing it up for debate and interpretation. Please, none of the "what I do is" or "what we do at my facility is".... I genuinely ask that you read and disect the .65 regarding the question I am about to post. Please do so before replying. Yes, I know some, if not most of you will just post anything anyway and not honor the request, but I guess that'll give me the right to call you an idiot. HEHE...j/k. Here goes:
Regarding Air Force 1, in the TERMINAL environment only (sorry EN ROUTE guys), must you append "heavy" as part of the callsign if he's flying in his H/B747? Again, please back up your statements with sections from the .65. I'm pretty sure you guys are all saying "yah, duh, that's an easy one", but again, I stress to please read the .65 and interpret, rather than spouting off random bits of frivilous information that does no good. Thanks. ER |

Re: Air Force One/Two (heavy?)
Posted: 09-04-2009, 10:58 AM Well, at first I was going to say "Of course not, why would you say heavy?!?!"... But then I actually looked it up, and now I'm going for Yes for two reasons. 1: AF1 Aircraft Identity (2-3-5) is not outside the domain of Aircraft Type (2-3-6), its in-line with it. 2: 2-4-14 Only specifies for En Route facilities to omit Heavy.
It's a special call-sign just like "L" or "T" or "SAM" etc.. and it doesn't specifically say to omit for Terminal. So just like any other call-sign, if its a heavy aircraft I'm going to say Heavy. |

Re: Air Force One/Two (heavy?)
Posted: 09-05-2009, 01:44 AM I interpret it as you must say heavy, and as some of you have read, it falls under EN ROUTE when you may omit. Any other interpretations?

You know Jeff, I'm just stirring the pot, so play along please. hehe but seriously, why would they have a shit fit? What's the significance in calling him heavy? Someone called him heavy here and no one said anything (besides the peanut gallery) |

Re: Air Force One/Two (heavy?)
Posted: 09-05-2009, 11:25 AM The thing is if they are in the B747, then it is a HEAVY, so my opinion you must say Heavy, I've never been told not to. In this day FAA management probably would write you up for not saying heavy.

Re: Air Force One/Two (heavy?)
Posted: 09-05-2009, 12:34 PM i was told it gives away the type of airplane their in, in case someone is scanning the frequency. to me...i agree with u guys. if it's heavy u say it.
p.s. when was the last time the president flew in an air force plane that wasn't the VC-25. i've only seen air force one 2 of 3 times but i haven't heard of any instances where they weren't a heavy. maybe it's just assumed. (ass out of u and me...i know) |

Re: Air Force One/Two (heavy?)
Posted: 09-05-2009, 03:38 PM well...i called him AF1 heavy when i was working him out as a departure on radar. No one said anything to me, and secret service didn't flinch. But in the back of my head i was thinking i shouldn't have called him heavy...and i don't know why.
long story short..i called AF1 a heavy, secret service and FAA didn't care |
