Well for the most part i'm doing it the same way as everyone else in regards to phraseology, and while there is no right way i believe for the most part everyone does it the same, kind of like how we all knew to blow on our nintendo cartridges without there being an internet to tell us.

"runway xx back taxi position and hold"
"n1234 will you be ready at the end?" "negative we need a few "n1234 continue holding short traffic 3 mile final"
etc etc

anyway my point was more or less aimed at the expected action of the pilot if you simply state "runway xx back taxi" as some of my coworkers do. if i'm saying that to a small aircraft, i expect them to back taxi, get off at the end and hold short on the open taxiway and then tell me when they are ready. however, i dont really feel that this is a 100% way of controlling the situation so i follow it up to make sure they know what i want them to do, and for the larger aircraft i make sure they'll be ready before i even taxi them out onto the runway. i do NOT want to get burned by a pilot who suddenly needs time before takeoff. a few of my coworkers expect them to back taxi, turn around, and tiph without ever being told to tiph which is something i definately do not agree with.

I think it may be because either way is correct (at least in my opinion). So long as the pilot knows what you mean, and he/she's not cleared for takeoff, I'm pretty sure no way is better than the next.

I am not saying I am right, but this is what I do.

Generally we have to have heavies back taxi from intersections since they cannot go to the end of the runway when the fighter wing is flying. I say :

"Casino77 Heavy, RWY 12 entry approved at A2 for back-taxi, make right 180 last 2,000 feet of the runway, position and hold, advise when ready"

I'll usually clear the A/C once it is established in it's turnaround as long as the position-and-hold instruction is not needed.

We have restrictions of direction or turns for FOD and where they can make their 180 due to runway composition. It may seem wordy, but the pilots always know what I am talking about (even Russian Antonov pilots) and I've never had an issue.
