hi everyone!

Got a few questions if you dont mind.

I want to be a ATC very badly! And honestly, i know its going to be rough. and maybe even close to impossible.

i am 100% OTS. no backround, experience, nothing.

my questions to you all.......

-what the percentage i get the chance to call myself a ATC? i mean...brutal honesty. i am married, with a 1 year old, but my son changing school is no problem yet at his age. i have discussed it with my wife, and i will be willing to work anywhere in the country (i heard this helps) so let me hear it?

-any idea when there will be postings on the FAA website for ATCS-trainee so i can apply? or should i just keep checking and hope one pops up?

-i have heard this process takes forever, thats fine...i have a nice job right now, with security....so i can afford to wait. i am 22 years old, so i have some years before i reach the max any advice?

-when i do eventually find a opening for OTS trainee position.....anything i should do special to get myself a chance to take the pre-employment exam?

thanks a bunch, this is my dream to get a position like this and have this as a career. any advice is totally welcome.

hope to see everyone around the board!

If you have nothing but time and REALLY want this job and can afford to go through a CTI program then Id suggest that... it will pretty much guarantee you a job. The FAA takes prior experience/military first... then CTI... then OTS.

As for the OTS route... thousands apply and hundreds get picked up. Its hard to tell you your odds since it will come down to how well you do on the test and where you are willing to go. Once you are in the hiring process it will probably take a good year and a half if not more.

If you're goal is to me a controller....then the quickest way I would suggest is going into the military.

With CTI you have to pay, with military they pay you and give you experience.

cti is not an option at this point, with a 1 year old i cant afford to go to school. too many bills. and military is not an option either (i have bad knees and ankles from football in college.)

so for OTS i need to just keep checking faa website no?

There are some speculative discussions going in the Pub9 section -- those will light up when the next public announcement (PUBNAT, for OTS applicants), comes out. There was one in July and the latest thinking is the next one won't be until December or January...

Wait and wait and wait some more. You have lots of time until you hit the age-30 cutoff, but give some thought to CTI programs. Some let you do the coursework on a part-time basis, and you could probably make it work depending on where you live and where the closest one is.

If you want it badly enough, be proactive. In the mean time, it won't hurt (though the amount it helps is debatable) to do some flight training and earn your PPL and instrument rating. Visit a couple of facilities near you for tours to get a feel for what different facilities are like and to glean insights into the hiring/training process and the possible career paths for you.

And of course, check SM at least 4 times a day for best results.

CTI may not be as expensive of an option as you think. There are a few community colleges that have CTI programs. You may be able to get it done in just 1 year. and community colleges are dirt cheap compared to to 4 year CTI programs.
