Heya from Virginia
Posted: 09-30-2009, 09:52 PM

Hey everyone, I just wanted to do an intro post. I'm Alex, a 4th year student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. I'll be graduating in May, though I'm hoping to apply for the PUBNAT tentatively scheduled for January ("You will need to watch our website for the next open general public announcement which is tentatively scheduled to open in Jan 2010"--from an email I got in response to a question I sent to the 9-amc... address... keeping fingers crossed on this one). If I don't make it, I'm planning on going to AT-CTI at CCBC (Baltimore, not Beaver) after graduation.

On a related note, does anyone know if you have to have graduated by the time you apply for a PUBNAT? I'll have the required 120 credits to graduate by December, but I won't have filled the area requirements to actually graduate until May. Will my 120 credits count as four years of college, or are they looking more along the lines of whether or not I've done eight semesters?

Anyway, it's good to be here. The site's been a lot of help for answering my questions regarding what it's like to be an ATC, where I'd want to go, etc.

-Alex

First of all, go Wahoos. I'm a huge UVA fan. I grew up in Roanoke, VA...yeah I know it was Hokie country but I didn't care. I've always been a rebel. I've got a lot of good memories on the UVA campus. Had a bunch of friends go there. I wasn't smart enough. Played in a coupel of the St. Elmo's annual kickball tournaments. Those were lots of fun.

Anyways, welcome to the site. Enjoy.

The FAA evaluates your college experience by credits earned at a rate of 30 credits is equal to 9 months work experience and by that you would have the required experience. If you have any work experience I would also suggest that you put that on the application when it opens.

Just make sure when you do apply to put down your ALL of your credit hours because without that they cannot evaluate your application.

In my case, I applied before I graduated and just noted on my application that I would graduate the next semester and I had no issues, but I had a little work experience to make up the difference.

I think you would be alright to apply.

Just a little insight from a fellow Virginian.

Haha, we're doing pretty terribly so far when it comes to football. For trivia night at a local place (Mellow Mushroom... I don't know if you've been there, Admin?), one group named themselves "We score more than our football team." Ouch.

That's the part I'm worried about. I have work experience, but nothing full time, and it's split across five different jobs, several of which have no idea I ever worked there because the manager has moved on long ago and I don't have any follow-up info. The most specialized job I can say I've ever worked is as a server at a diner... Not the most impressive work experience ever. Oh well, I'll just hope for the best on that one. Thanks for the input, though.

Work experience is work experience in the FAA's eyes and they will pro-rate part-time work experience to full-time work experience, 20 hr/wk for 6 months is equal to 3 months full-time work experience.
