ATC girls?

Hey i'm a 27 year old chick taking the AT-SAT test in about 3 weeks... whats the ratio of girls to boys testing for this? or in the training? it just seems as though this is a man dominated career

I'm sure there's no way they'll say this to anyone now, but I'm sure it's still true. When I got into the FAA in '91, I had been waiting for 2 years after scoring a 98.4% on what was then called the OPM test, since replaced by the AT-SAT. The ever-so-pleasant lady in Des Plaines IL at the regional office told me I had 2 things working against me. I was white and I was male. She actually said this. Now, as I said, there's no way anyone would say that now, but I have a sneaking suspicion that you'll have no problem getting in.

Pretty male dominated, but I'd say there are definitely more women coming in!

My CTI school is probably about 20-30% female, which I think reflects the facilities I've visited

The tower I'm going to is an up-down and did not have a single female controlling traffic the day I was there to take a tour. They say more and more women are getting into this career though. Maybe by the time this staffing crisis is over the ratio will be more balanced...

I took the AT-SAT last year and was the only girl with ten stinky boys in the classroom. I only say "stinky" cuz couple of them looked like they had partied hard the night before! I'm 26. Good luck on your test and lemme know if you have any questions about it though I gotta say, it's nice that there is now a practice option on this site.

Yup yup! I am 30...I will be the big 3-1 in december ACK!! Unreal. I don't feel 31...I dont look 31. Oh....where was I? Oh yeah. I took the test Jan of this year (feels like 4 years ago!) I was one of two girls in the class. The other girl was probably 21 or 22. Dressed like she was about to go hookin' afterwards. THere were about 30 people in the class all together.

i talk to lots of other female controllers at ZDC and ZNY, theres a few at ZJX as well, not to mention towers and approaches i talk to, but then again, there's ALOT of female navy controllers
