Hello everyone! (i have a few questions too)
Posted: 10-26-2009, 02:50 PM

Hello everyone, My name is Anthony.

I'm really interested in becoming a controller but i don't know where to begin.

I've heard of people getting all their training done for free. Me already having a $80,000 loan to pay back for flight school (didn't complete because i ran out of money) I can't afford any costly training.

So if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

Thanks!

Hey Anthony. Welcome to SM. Here is a good thread that should get your initial questions answered as well as point you in the right direction.

We're actually paid for our training once and if we're hired by the FAA. I'm not sure what all is entailed to contract towers and training, but I'm sure the info is available in that section.

Quick answer is you apply to a public announcement, a "Pubnat". These occur a few times a year with the next one rumored to be in January 2010. This is the only way to apply without being a prior controller, VRA, or going to a FAA approved school (CTI).

Longer, more in-depth answer requires reading and lots of typing and I've procrastinated my global civilization term paper long enough, lol, so here ya go,

I know you don?t want to amass any more debt for school (believe me, I understand!) but the best way to put yourself in position to be considered for employment is to attend a CTI school and apply through a CTI announcement on the FAA job board. You can no doubt get selected as an OTS as many people have, I am just saying CTI is putting yourself in the best position. Or I guess you could join the military and be a controller!

However you decide to go about it, I wish you luck. Welcome to SM!

I'll definitely consider it
