New to SM!!!
Posted: 12-07-2009, 10:43 PM

Hello,

Let me start off by introducing myself. I am currently a high school student who plans to become an ATC unless you guys can talk me out of it. I am currently working on my private pilot liscence and enjoy flying. My question is:

1.) What is the average day of an ATC?
2.) Would you reccamend me being an ATC?
3.) If you were to do things over again, would you still be an ATC?

Thank you,

Caleb

Welcome to the site!!
I'm also one of the few high school students on here. The people on here are great and are a lot of help. I can answer one of your questions bc I've seen it before. There is no average day in ATC! Are you a senior? Where do you plan to go to college?

Thanks for the quick responce and warm welcome, anyways I am still a sophomore, but I am undecided where I want to go. Besides, I still have quite a bit of time to decide where I want to go, and maybe you guys could help me find a good college.

The main question is do you want a 4 year management w/CTI degree or a 2 year CTI degree? Check out the CTI dicussion forum. There is a LOT of good information on there. I'm not gonna tell you where to go bc that will start a big debate about who has the best program. I will say that I'm going to CCBC in Pennsylvania. You can do their program in 3 consecutive semesters(1 year) if you already have your PPL. I would assume you already have a copy of the most current AIM. I would recommend downloading the 7110.65(ATC Bible) there are also a few other documents when you find the page I would download them all. They will answer your questions a lot of the time without having to look like a total noob and also if you will scan through it, it will give you some more insight about the job. Search around the site bc I know it's here I'm just not sure where. If you don't have any luck js PM me your email and I'll send them to you.

atc is a great career. i'm retired faa and found that the faa offers lots of benefits, early retirement, health benefits, vacation time... but there are many routes to atc. military(work both fixedwing and helicopter for best experience, ie. marines, navy, air force army in that order..if you want in with the faa.), cti schools ( but make sure you get out with a cto so you can hire on with contractor if the faa isn't hiring) or take the at-sat and see how it goes. atc is not flying but any aviation knowledge helps. there are also internships available at times through the faa for high school students. check out faa.gov, careers, students, etc. . i retired at 48 with 25 years in and have no regrets....jobs exciting, challenging, fun (depending where you work) demanding, occassionally scary but overall you cant beat it...

Welcome to the site! It's always great to have experienced controllers on here. Where did you retire from? BTW you can't get a CTO from a CTI school any longer.
