New Guy From Dallas
Posted: 12-18-2009, 11:25 AM Thought I would drop a line and sort of introduce myself. I've watched the boards for awhile and just never posted. So hi from Dallas I guess.
I'm looking to apply next Pubnat (when I last talked to the FAA a few weeks ago they said maybe February). Anybody know how much, if any, does post secondary education (aside from a CTI releated degree) account for in the hiring process. I filled out the personal info on the ASAP system and I know there is a Vet Preference but it dosen't say anything about education. I'm currenly finishing my Master's Degree (not anything related to this career field) but I'm burnt on school and don't know if I'm up for finishing a PhD right now and decided to app. -Jessie |

The importance of a degree has been widely debated and there isn't a clear answer. I'm not sure anyone has a true handle on how the selections are made as there has been VRA's, CTI's, and OTS candidates hired. All of them with varying degrees of education and work experience. My guess is that having your Masters degree will not help too much in selection. The best you can hope for is a WQ score on your AT-SAT, if/when PUB 9 ever comes out. If you don't want to finish a PhD, but might be up for another year of school, you should look into a fast track CTI program. It would be about 1 year and then your chances would be drastically increased. Good luck and welcome to the site! P.S. -- Some of us are sometimes cranky from this year and a half wait. Don't take offense to any jabs that might come your way! |

Re: New Guy From Dallas
Posted: 12-18-2009, 11:41 AM Does having a CTI decrease the wait at all? Or does it just increase the chance of getting hired? I do understand that for the most part we are venturing into the realm of speculation again but it never hurts to ask.

It doesn't decrease the wait but it increases your chances a LOT. Don't quote me on this but I was read somewhere a while back that the FAA has hired about 75% of CTI grads. CTI grads are not guaranteed but are pretty much guaranteed ya know what I mean? Also on that 75% you have to consider the number of people that will be DQ'd bc of medical, security, background, etc....
