I've been reading this Forum for several months now and thought I'd sign up. I started my career in the AF at MacDill AFB 2 years after the strike in 1983. Worked ARTs IIIa for 4 years and was a direct hire at Miami Center in 1988. Worked ZMA until 2000 and transferred to West Palm Beach, PBI. In 2006, after getting my ass whipped by too many hurricanes, the wife-unit said let's get out of here. I bid on an FLM job at Knoxville (TYS) and was selected. Now that's 23 years CONTROLLING before entering management. Believe me, ATC is the best job out there. FLM in a small facility has it's good and bad. Working planes is the best. My advice to anyone out there starting out, start at the highest facility you can stand and REALLY learn how to work planes. Don't 'pooh-pooh' phraseology and be eager to learn. Later in your career, you can work your way down the food chain and still be at the top of your pay band. Have fun. Good luck. It sure beats working for a living. Oh yes, no point in being nasty to pilots. They'll fly whether-or-not you're controlling them.

ATC has been a dream job for me. As I approach retirement, looking back, I can't imagine anything else I'd rather have done. I have two business degrees and don't use them at all. I imagine it's helped me with retirement planning so I guess it wasn't a waste. Get used to shift work, missing kids, ball games, concerts, picnics with the neighbors on Friday night, etc. But when it's time to go home, you unplug and go home. That report isn't waiting to be done. Work busy traffic when you're young and you'll always be at the top of the pay band. I have a peer who thought the correct course was to work from the bottom up. He makes 40k/year less than me. Not that money is everything, just saying, more is better. Do what is in you and your family's best interest. Good luck.
