Some questions about the USAF and ATC program
Posted: 01-23-2010, 11:04 AM I am currently going through the process of joining the USAF and ATC is my goal for joining and i have some questions...
-My school ethics have changed quite a bit since high school and even college for the better...im wondering how hard is Tech school for the ATC program? -Because i have 72 college credits i am able to enter as E3 and im wondering what the oppertunity for advancement in rank is like? -I scored a 53 out of 99 on the test in the recruits office which he said was "great"...ha ok...and i have been told i can expect to score about 20-25 points higher on the ASVAB...at that rate should i be offered the ATC option? -Once enlisted im hearing talk of certain deployment which is A ok with me...i am enlisting to serve my country...just wondering if i can expect some sort of heightend deployment pay? and what is the typical deployment length for the USAF? -On the topic of pay i will be married before i am in...what type of pay increase can i expect in that aspect?...its not all about the money to me as much as the oppertunity and education but at the same time it is important THANK YOU all very much for any input! Currently getting all the paper work straight...had surgery on my hand about a year and a half ago so i have to get that cleared...looks like thats goin smooth then i just have to wait for my official college transcript to get to the recruit and i will be off to MEPS! My fiance and i are very excited as we believe this will be a life changing oppertunity for the better! Thanks Again |

Re: Some questions about the USAF and ATC program
Posted: 01-24-2010, 02:54 PM Hey guys, i've been through the ringer with USAF recruiters on ATC slots. I just got my OTS application denied, even though I aced the AFOQT. My dad is a retired USAF recruiter and my uncle is a recruiter right now.
Anyways, for some reason the USAF is the ONLY branch that does not usually guarantee you a job at meps, but rather a 'specialty area.' 13M is the specialty area for ATC, but unfortunately, this also includes jobs like missile and space ops, where you might just be taking 72 hour shifts guarding remote missile silos outside of minot afb, ND. So there's a risk you're taking. The Navy, Marines, and Army all guarantee you jobs the day you leave MEPS. The air force is pretty fat and happy right now. When you sign your contract with the USAF at MEPS, the four determining factors that decide which job you get are as follows: 1. Needs of the air force 2. Needs of the air force 3. Needs of the air force 4. What you want. |

Re: Some questions about the USAF and ATC program
Posted: 01-24-2010, 05:41 PM The Army is actually moving towards getting rid of the active duty controllers at fixed bases. If you join the Army as an ATC you will basically be working at deployed fields and remote areas with a dirt strip and a hand held radio.
I was USAF stationed at an ARMY base for 1.5 years... they phased out all the Army "controllers" while I was there and it was strictly USAF and DoD |

Re: Some questions about the USAF and ATC program
Posted: 01-25-2010, 05:41 PM USAF tech school was something like 5 or 6 months long if I remember right.
And an OTS applicant is "off the street"... basically applicants that have no aviation background or experience but meet other standards set by the FAA for employment, like... a certain college degree or running a business for x amount of years, etc. They have a few of them. |

Re: Some questions about the USAF and ATC program
Posted: 01-26-2010, 12:17 AM Some will have aviation experience, just nothing to do with controlling (at least according to FAA criteria). There're plenty of private and commercial pilots in the OTS group... a few all the way up to ATP. And a few who've done a little controlling on occasion, but don't meet the quals for 52 weeks or a CTO or whatever.
But most are zero experience, yeah. |
