How many VRA are in job pool?
Posted: 02-24-2010, 06:03 PM

OTS and CTI peeps are really interested in how many VRA there are or might be in the job pool, or will be next year etc...

Please provide some insight into this or how we could find this information.

For ex. how many ATC's does the military employ?

Someone said 800 in VRA pool right now, which seems a bit high.

The USMC has roughly 300 ATC active duty. We are the smallest in all the services so you can start your speculation there

So if the USAF has 2500 and the USN has 2500 and 300 from the USMC. That is 5300 controllers. 800 in this years job pool. Means that 15% of the Military controllers applied this past year. Seems high. Although the paper I pulled some of these numbers from claimed nearly a 50% loss of first term controllers. I know I did not account for the Army and the Coast Guard; but you get the idea.

50% loss of first term controllers. That might account for it beings so high. If it is that high though, that is a solid year of VRA, another solid year of CTI already waiting, and another full year of CTI graduating shortly getting hired.

Not much hope for OTS in the future I shall say.

Your first link doesn't work, but I get the idea, and I see where I can search now.

Thanks much! I'm glad I have my vet pref, but you guys are in the good boat. heh.

How about the military controller job. Was it like normal military? Vehicle maintenance, field problems, moving heavy things from storage, hurrying up and waiting, inspections etc... ? I can't think of anything else off the top of my head that was ... extra fun

Okay how about this. How much pressure was there to reinlist when you got out?

When you got in military ATC, was the general consensus in the field that you would just do one term and get out to make the big bucks?

What is the deploy rates with military ATC?

Was anyone Army 15Q?

my experience in getting out:

it was high pressure at about one year out. at 4 months it was clear i was getting out and i was forgotten about. they are like care salesmen. retention goes on senior enlisted peoples yearly evaluations. the navy was overmanned when i was getting out because of the bad economy.

so they stopped giving reenlistment bonuses. it was an easy decision for me. but i had to do all my research myself. i was given false information about the FAA, like purposeful lies about it to try to get me to reenlist.

i had a couple moments during my time that i thought about staying in for life. but the time was right to bail.
