Would a bad ATSAT score (for Pubnat8) affect your chances of VRA?
Posted: 11-02-2009, 02:55 PM

My hubby just took his ATSAT test today and he feels like he bombed it. He went through Marine Corps air traffic control school and passed in top of his class, but said the some of the ATSAT was harder than stuff he's had to do and just doesn't feel like he did too great. Now he's afraid that he just ruined his chances of VRA. Did he?

He applied Pubnat 8 AND VRA. So he just wasn't sure if this ATSAT score is bad, if the VRA people will see it and not hire him because of it.

The FAA will see his AT-SAT now that he chose to take it. Also, I don't want to say 100%, but I'm pretty sure that unless you possess a FAA recognized ATC experience(CTO, Approach rating), you DO have to take the AT-SAT. This is the same poster who asked about FD and Final control expereience counting on a resume. Her husband had no choice but to take the AT-SAT.

I don't think that's true. For the VRA - I've never heard of having to take the ATSAT! Only Pubnats....

You may not have to take it with a CTO or radar rating, but they'll still offer it to you. However, without a "Qualifying ATC Experience" its my knowledge they're going to want you to take the test. A coworker in the Army got out with only GCA experience and was required to take the AT-SAT.

If that were the case, then why don't they select you for the ATSAT when you apply for VRA? The whole point of VRA is that you have 52 weeks of ATC experience - regardless on if you have a CTO or not. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never heard of anyone taking the ATSAT unless they're doing the PUBNAT announcements.

The 52 weeks is for the VRA and the CTO hire. The part that makes him VRA eligible is the military experience, listed here

Quote:
***VRA Eligibility Requirements***: The following veterans are eligible: 1. Veterans who have a compensable service-connected disability rating of 10% or more; or 2. Veterans who served on active duty in the Armed Forces during a war or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge or expeditionary medal was awarded; or 3. Veterans who served on active duty in the Armed Forces during a military operation for which an Armed Forces Service Medal (AFSM) was awarded on or after June 1, 1992; or 4. Veterans who have separated from active service (for other than training purposes) within the last three years. In addition to the above criteria, all veterans must have been discharged under general or honorable conditions.
And like I mentioned earlier, my coworker, before re-enlisting, was asked to take the AT-SAT as he didn't have a qualifying ATC experience. I know of other VRA hires being ASKED to take it, but VRA's are allowed to refuse it; it's not a requirement. The fact that he DID take it means they're going to include it with his packet.
