Switching to Post 9/11 GI Bill and Receiving OJT Benefits
Posted: 12-14-2009, 09:11 AM

Vets,

I was concerned that if I switched to the new GI Bill, once i started with the FAA, I wouldnt get the OJT rates for training. Well, google is cool, and I found proof.

http://www.gibill.va.gov/pamphlets/C...3_Pamphlet.pdf

Read the second paragraph.

From what I was hoping was going to be a 6 month process (from app start to OKC), is probably going to take A LOT longer.

The VA will pay for your school, give some $ for books, and pay you a BAH rate for E5 with dependents. So, 8 hours of schooling a week will get me $1000 a month tax free on top of my unemployment and disability===the same that I made as SSgt WS in the AF.

Be careful with the unemployment and going to school....most states won't let you go to school full time (the only way to get all the money for the gi bill) and collect unemployment at the same time.

according to the GI Bill website, with the post 9/11 GI Bill, "You may be able to receive benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill for on-the-job, apprenticeship, flight, or other professional training if you have entitlement under another VA education program that covers such training."

Also, be advised, you're only getting the BAH if you're attending a certain amount of classes.

So be careful to inquire. I'm going to ask a million questions when I ETS and elect one or the other in a few days.

Im going to have to make the dreaded call to unemployment and wait an hour to talk to someone. Hopefully it would be a big deal, im only taking 2 night classes, for 4 hours on mon/wed. They are 8 wk courses so its considered FT, and shouldnt hinder my ability to find a job.
