    Trainee in Need of Advice

Hello all, I have been at my first facility for over a year now. Training has been extremely slow due to being very understaffed and virtually no traffic. The last few trainees before me have washed out and it is not a good training situation at all. We will be even more severely understaffed as they have somehow let 3 more people go and a couple of retirees. Are there any facilities that will consider accepting an ERR from a trainee? I know the academy allows you to go to places like Alaska and Puerto Rico if you volunteer straight out of the academy even if they are not on your class facility list. Any advice would be great. I would be more than willing to just go to a level 5 tower only so I could hopefully check out quickly and try to ERR. I absolutely love getting to work traffic when I get the rare chance but, with no traffic I just sit around all day and listen to the facility drama. It is also an up-down so there is a much longer training period before you can checkout and put in an ERR. Any advice would be much appreciated. I am open to anything.

You can always submit an ERR for other facilities, but in the NCEPT process developmentals are looked at after everything else.
Depending on what facility level you're at, you could take a gamble with the NEST and either voluntarily remove yourself from training, or stick it out, and see if the NEST retains you for a tower-only facility somewhere.
If they let 3 controllers out, your staffing is either not as bad as you're saying, or they were approved to leave on a deviation from the release policy (either supervisor or TMU.)

How much training do you get?

Thank you for a response! And I get anywhere from 2-5 hrs a week. And the time I do get is very slow to no traffic.

If you were on different RDOs would that improve the traffic quantity you see and the amount of training?
What's happened at some facilities is the older supervisors and OJTIs want to see you work the 100% level traffic that they saw around 10+ years ago. On the best traffic day right now, it may only be 60% of what they saw. Their expectations haven't changed to account for less traffic and more sporadic training.

Almost sounds like you’re a tower trainee at my facility

That is exactly the situation I am in right now. It is not anywhere close to the traffic they feel like they need to see us work in order to checkout but, that kind of traffic is very few and far between. I have already switched my RDO’s in an effort to get more traffic but it has not made that big of a difference.

What's supposed to happen is you are trained and certified on the actual traffic levels that you'll experience. Unfortunately not everyone sees it that way.
Are you anywhere close to running out of hours on whichever position you're training on?

No I still have a little under 50% of my local hrs left. Training is just super slow and very hit and miss. Hard to be consistent at all.

Are you doing well with the traffic you see, i.e., no Box 1s?

2-5 hours per week? What’s the target hours / minimums for the position? Additionally, what are they marking on the form for the volume / difficulty?

Are all your forms marked ‘light’ and not difficult? Also does your training plan specify traffic types to train on and the amount of hours per week they would like you to get?
