    Same here. My class was cancelled at Eagle 5 days before I was supposed to start. I would have been furloughed now anyway...

    Re: Airline Pilot <-> ATC

    I too like everyone else here had the dream of making a career out of being a pilot. I started at 15, was a MEII by 19, flight instructed, flew for a news company, flew a Conquest II, CJ1, CJ2, and Beech Premier Jet 1A. Got hired by Eagle over 2 years ago and have flown the Saab 340, and now im on the EMJ 145.

    So here I am almost 24 years old now and I realize I will never reach the dream that I had as a little kid. The dream of traveling the world, flying a large aircraft, hanging out with fun crews and partying in different countries, making enough money to have a nice car and a decent home, enough money to provide for my wife and I and future kids. I'm sure everyone here has seen 'Catch me if you can', where he is walking in uniform with young hot flight attendants and everyone in the airport moves out of the way and gives some respect when 'the pilot' walks by. Well those days are gone. Now we have old fat ugly flight attendants and everyone looks at you like your just a stupid bus driver in the air.

    Well thats my story/rant. Hopefully with ATC I can be nearer to the money I dreamed of, and still have a bit left over to fly my own small plane to keep the thrill there.

    I flew the CJ1 and 2 for a private individual. After those he sold them both and bought a Falcon 2000. Insurance said that they wanted me to have a billion+ hours to fly it as PIC, so the owner offered me a right seat position in it. But I didn't want to sit right seat, only because he only flew about 100 hours a year, and at the time I wanted time in my logbook. So I quit with him and went to work for an on demand company flying the Conquest, with a guarantee to fly the Premier. So I flew the conquest for 3 months, then went to Flight Safety for the Premier 1A. (The company was selling 1/4 shares of the premier like hotcakes, and they were buying 1 aircraft every 2 weeks. And hiring 4 pilots every 2 weeks). 1/2 the way through training they saw the writing on the wall for the downturn in the economy and pulled 16 of us out of school and fired us all and sold the airplanes.
    So I needed a job right then on the spot. I went and interviewed at eagle and I was sitting in ground school 3 days later.

    I also wanted some more flying time. At the time I was only doing about 15 hours a month, and I knew that with the airlines I would average about 70 a month of actual time flown. So the want for more hours, combines with the need for a job to pay the bills landed me at the airlines. Now that I'm here I realize that there is no money in it. So if I go ATC, and get hired, I can make enough money to buy a small plane and fly for fun, like the good ol' days.

    Good luck, but you might have missed the glory days for both pilot and ATC hiring. OTS ATC hiring was going great guns in '07 and '08, but has dropped off drastically in '09. CTI and VRA are the way to go now.

    See some people say that it is slowing up, but then others say that they need ATC'ers badly and that all the older guys are coming up on retirement. So I think it still would be good to get into.

    Have you taken the ATSAT yet or are you waiting for pubnat 9?

    In my honest opinion I think that Eagle is one of the best regionals if there is such a thing. Best in terms of job stability, treatment from management, pay, QOL and stuff like that. But in spite of that, its still a dead end low paying road.

    I hear what you're saying, but the number of CTI schools has increased from 5 not long ago to over 30 now, and the DoD won't be offering massive re-enlistment bonuses to controllers with Iraq winding down. Like I say, good luck.
