    FAA Employment

Just thought I'd ping the crowd ---

Wondering if the FAA hires off the street for Airway Transportation System Specialist? And if so, approximately how often?

Background: I'm currently 33 y/o USAF ATC with a TOL as a Controller in the FAA. I'm thinking about reenlisting to pick up the automation cert from the USAF (covers STARS) and then going guard as a controller and trying to pick up a TOL with the FAA as a System Specialist. Obviously going this route will completely remove being a FAA controller as an option as I will be past the age cutoff. Trying to get as much information/advice as I can before making a decision.

    Greetings Jonny,

So to be honest, if you're in this for the money - follow that Controller TOL to the end. If you get a big facility, you will be making some bank.

The problem with the .gov is nothing, and I mean nothing, moves fast.

Keep calling and pounding on the window of the POC for the TOL, and make them know that you are eager to start working for the FAA. The 'ol squeaky wheel syndrome.

In my opinion, if you are already a military CPC, you will be much happier continuing to do that on this side.

    Just my opinion,

    Scotter

Off topic, but do you think a 27 year old can join the USAF with hopes of getting a CTO?

    Off topic and wrong forum.

As to the OP’s question. Yes the FAA does hire 2101’s off the street, but you still need a certain amount of qualifying experience, either from school or work history, to be truly competitive. So, it’s not truly off the street in the sense that ATC OTS is.

I currently know of 2 SSC's in my district that have expedited hiring authority for nav/comm/radar due to understaffing. So it is true.
