    Re: METAR - SPECI Observations

It'll take you all of five minutes to learn... they're pretty easy, you just have to remember which abbreviations mean what. Once you get used to what order to expect the information in, that'll help.

Here's a pretty good page from the Weather Underground that describes how they work.

If you feel so inclined, you can get a METAR app (I use AeroWeather) for your phone or computer, and just take a look at the coded results every so once in a while and figure it out in your head. I did that while I went through ground school for my private; had it down pretty quickly.

Thanks. My dad's a pilot too. He's been trying to prep me on what I need to learn. I think he thought I would have to be able to encode and decode....so I'm glad I asked.

I don't know about five minutes to learn, but it is easy. It's all about repetition, just like the rest of Air Traffic

    Re: METAR - SPECI Observations

Anyone knows what the definition of the forth field (22005KN020 ) in the METAR below is?
I have never seen any "KN" qualifier before. Is it new or is it garbled? It looks to me like two fields, wind and sky, were smashed up. E.g.
    22005KN020 should have been 22005KT... + BKN020

There were just a little over 200 records in 2009 with this qualifier. I would gladly ignore them. Unfortunately, my job is to docode METAR with all the detail as much as possible.

    Any thought?

    SPECI KPIT 010031Z 22005KN020 OVC036020 OVC010039 SP83 RMK AO2 RAVC036 21/18 A2988 RMK AO2 010034 SPECI KPHL 010030ZAO2 RAVC036 21/18 A2988 RMK AO2 010034 SPECI KPHL 010030Z 24020G24KT 5SM RA BR SCT010HL SAUS41 RMK AO2 RAB01 P0001<br />

Your theory sounds as good as any. I can't recall any other mashups like that in the past that I've seen, but garbled METARs, sure. Maybe cross-reference it with other local weather data, see if there's a ceiling at 200 that'd confirm your idea.

metar - the normal weather sequence reported every hour by a certified weather observer.
speci - a special weather sequence reported at any time because it meets certain criteria. if you see a speci it's usually because the weather is deteriorating, or it's already bad and it's improving. you won't see a speci on a clear day.
Speci on clear day---unless there's an aircraft accident.
