If you're willing to venture outside the realm of aviation contact your local state, county or city, check their .gov website, and see if you can apply for a state/county/city job as a "Communications Specialist" (aka, 911-operator).

Usually you'll find that there are no available openings because the turnover rate is generally slim to none. My local area just combined many different city PDs and FDs into one county Emergency Communications Center to centralize operations and aid in the transfer of communications between municipalities. It's cool, I applied and got to check it out. It almost looks like a TRACON inside ad operates like an ARTCC. You're "on position" for a little longer though..

I had to withdraw my app though, had another opportunity come up. They were willing to pick me up with no prior exp and train though, worth a shot.

Although, they prob won't be looking for someone who only wants a temp job for 1-2yrs

If you don't want an aviation related job check out substitute teaching. It pays $70-90 a day, you get to pick the days you work essentially, and all you really need is a 4 year degree or particular amount of college credits. AKA no teaching license required. The best bet may be to contact a local school and they can point you in the right direction or there is always GOOGLE.

Depends on where you are. We just moved up here to Washington state from Texas. My wife was able to sub in Texas without any particular qualification beyond her degree and a successful interview process, but up here you have to get some sort of license. However, she has been able to get a paraeducator job up here -- a title that can encompass a few different roles. Speaking of which, that's also something you can look at in some places, along with special ed.

And yeah, the pay is pretty good. It was over $100 back in the Austin area, and up here, if you're willing to get that license, it can be even higher. Not bad at all.

I just got my substitute license about 2 weeks ago. I'm 23 and NEVER expected to be teaching. The pay here is $125/day, and the only requirements were a 4 year degree, interview and background check. Hopefully I get picked up for the March Panel and get hired late '10, early '11. Either way, as long as your young and healthy, its something you really should look into if your just trying to burn 6-12 months.

Just thought i'd let people who have experience and a rating controlling and or possibly a degree, who are still waiting for the FAA, apply at UND aerospace as an ATC lecturer (52K a year in Grand forks ND) its a good job for those who are waiting and its a cheap cost of living up there, the only thing that sucks is the extremely cold winter... But do it quickly as the fall semester starts sometime next month or in sept... Interviews and such are this month, i got the thing for the interview but got a better job so i wont be doing it. Also UND has great benefits and the most current and up to date simulator systems. Check it out and good luck to those applying.

Horse race assistant. Tracks run on a tight training schedule. And unless you have 3 horses, which most have about 25 or more, its a push to get everything in and out. Not only that you have to manage the pairing up cool outs and people to do them. I realized it one morning standing there with the list in my hand and directing people the parrallels between it and a tower though its based on timing kind of like non radar. And it takes virtually no time to get in this spot. You start as a hot walker, show some initiative and you are there.
