    DoD Overseas Permanent Position

    Hello all,

If I accept a 2152 job in Europe, how long are you able to stay? After the initial 3 years are up, how hard is it to keep extending? Also, will you still get priority placement back to the states if you extend? It’s with the army.

I am currently FAA and interested in some DoD jobs.

I was a CPC at a FAA 12 and got selected for a GS12 gig overseas. I turned it down after finding out a couple things. 3 years is standard with an option for an extra 2 years at the end, for a total of 5. A policy change limits your time in one duty station. You cannot spend more than 5 years at one overseas base. You can go overseas to overseas, but no longer than 5 consecutive years at each location. As far as priority, yea you get it, but not in a desirable way. You enter priority placement program (PPP) which the DoD says this is your next base (international or domestic), take it or resign. These things were true for the Air Force job I declined in May. Hope that helps.

Well damn, that doesn’t sound good. I don’t think that I could accept it knowing that I will only be there for a max of 5 years. Thanks for the info.

I'm not so sure about the "consecutive years at EACH location" part. I think it's 5 consecutive years... period. So, if you spend 3 years at one overseas then got hired at another, you'll only be able to do 2 years before having to rotate back to the US. No quoting me but I think that's how it works.

You may be right, but I don’t think the DoD has overseas 2152 jobs for 2 year assignments. I can’t speak from experience. This is what I was told directly by the DoD civilian I would have been replacing.

This is correct, they cracked down hard on waivers/extensions.
