    Re: Housing at Academy

Makes sense. I appreciate the insight. I really want to hear what people think of the pro's/con's to those places. I'm trying to get a solid feel for which option is the most valuable. I feel like IB is similar to a college dorm and anything else would be living "off campus". I've seen the pictures and it looks...very enticing. Thank you again for your feedback.

IB provides buffets and you live on your own, if that appeals to you. I'm a picky eater and shy - so I want to buy my own food and be forced to live with people and make friends which is why I ended up going for the 3 bedroom no food pack at Kim's.

    Random question:

Would I need a laptop/computer while attending the academy?

If you really wanna be economical (which I did during tower school), and have your own car check out Warren house. Not the best neighborhood, but a fully furnished studio was like 550/mo with cable. Pay for your own electricity and Internet if you want it. All in It probably cost me 800/month to live while I was there. But it's a lot more effort to get to study groups, and you will have some sketchy (but usually friendly) neighbors.

Or pay $35 a night and stay in your own place at Heritage at Midtown, which is what I did during tower school. You would be staying in a cooler part of the city (not the crappy suburbs where most of the housing providers are).

IB is a shithole. mold in the rooms, poor quality furniture. 40 or 50 people are trying to get out due to bed bugs in the rooms. The food they provide sucks, and they never fix anything.

IB advertised hard on this forum to cover up the fact that their facility is a shithole

I graduated from the academy recently. There were a couple of my classmates that wanted to move out (but never did because who has time for that when you're studying). I recommend either Kim's place (where I stayed) or something else.

Did you previously stay here? We are certified free of bed bugs so I am unsure of who may be trying to get out but let me assure you that we also do not make anyone sign a lease keeping them here. They pay 2 weeks at a time and we will refund them if they check out early for any reason. This would be the first time Isola Bella has posted on this forum. Hi. I am Laura McCoy, one of the Personal FAA Concierge's at Isola Bella. I can answer any questions anyone may have. Contact me via email, call, or PM.

    Re: Housing at Academy

^I can confirm this, as I checked out early and IB did refund my money. They didn't give me any issues about it either, despite the fact that I gave them extremely short notice (as in I informed them right before I left lol). And no, I didn't leave because of any problems with my apartment.

I didn't find IB to be a "shithole" at all. Its no Ritz-Carlton, but its also not the Motel 6. My apartment was clean, spacious, and had no mold or bedbugs. Contrary to what I've read, I never felt like I was staying in a college dorm; the complex was usually pretty quiet. Food wasn't the best, but it was free, so I can't complain. I plan to stay at IB again when I return to OKC, if that gives you any reassurance.

    Re: Housing at Academy

The only mold I experienced was in the closet where the washer and dryer are located. The dryer is not vented so all of the hot moist goes into the closet. You have to leave the door of the closet open and the window in your room open with the fan on. I am the only person I know who has had an issue with mold and Isola bella was quick to address THAT issue. The reviews around the net are pretty incorrect. If you have questions, send me a PM and I'll be more than happy to go into detail.

Does anyone know of a hotel in the area that will honor the 58.80 daily rate for just a 2 day stay. I switched over to Anatole but the room wont be ready until two days after my start day.

What price did you get for Anatole? 58.80? which floor plan?

Yeah its 58.80 for the 1 bed 1 bath. I was leaning towards Kim's but my wife and daughter will be coming out for a little over a week and I didn't really want to be in a house during that time. Honestly looking at the reviews and pics it seems like a nice facility, downside is it takes the full per diem.

    Re: Housing at Academy

I'll be honest....My boyfriend was at the Academy July 2015-Nov 2015. He stayed at Kim's place. I came to visit him several times on the weekend being that I live semi close. Although Kim's place is nice, there was a lot of partying. THUS only 4 out of his class of 14 passed. Every time I visited or talked to him they were drinking and partying all night Thurs-Sun. You do have 1 or 2 roommates. And a lot of times you may have a roommate who is there for additional training. Not in your class. That was the case with my boyfriend. His roommate was already an ATC but was there for completely different training. I've heard good and bad things about IB, but if I had to give my opinion, I would stay at IB. friend of mines B/F just completed the Academy and stayed at IB. He had no issues, and didn't have the distractions. And if you want a career as an ATC...especially OTS....you will need ALL the quietness and study time you can get...TRUST ME. I know from my boyfriends experience....this is not easy training and is a lot to learn. Don't waste time on partying. I'm not saying that everyone at Kim's place parties, and I'm not saying that people at IB don't....But When my BF was there, there was a lot of partying.....and it makes it hard to study when that is all that is going on around you. And like I said. 4 out of 14 in that class made it. But just be aware of that.

I'm staying at Kim's starting Monday. I have heard both sides of Kim's, and I'm really hoping I'm not stuck with a bunch of partiers near me. Both my roommates are in the same type of class as me so hopefully everyone takes ATC seriously.

    Re: Housing at Academy

Hey guys, So I am down here now and I ended up going with IB for housing. As you can tell from my OP I was pretty skeptical about IB, but it really is not that bad. The food isn't the greatest, I usually make my own but it's a nice option to have when you're feeling super lazy or you have to be up at 5:30 am for class. Not the best, but mass quantities of hotel food is never the greatest. The internet sucks...I hardwire in though and it's totally fine...it only sucks because I can't watch netflix in bed. But, I Skype a lot with my family and as long as I'm hardwired, the call never drops. The washer and dryer isn't huge but it gets the job done...just a heads up though it vents into the room, so leave the closet door open and a window! (I don't know why they don't tell you that when you check in...thats how you get mold)

Over all...it's not the nicest, most glamorous place. But if you've ever lived in a dorm room before - this is about 100x better. It's only four months and you have privacy, free courtesy cars to go grocery shopping, classmates close by, cheap rental cars, a gym on site and a kitchen to cook in. I haven't had any trouble with any bugs, mold, neighbors or anything like that and I'm saving money from the lodging per diem, which is pretty great as academy pay is fairly low.

I hope this helps someone make a decision! I was so nervous about coming down here and staying at IB, but if I came back to OKC for more training I would probably stay here again. Privacy and living by myself were my main priorities, and IB is the best choice for that I think. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask and I will try my best to answer. Congrats to all making it through the process! It's long, but should be worth it :-)

EDIT: apparently they are no longer offering the referral rate, but if you do have housing questions I can try to answer as best I can! My class is staying all over the place so I can get info if you ask for it
