    Pregnancy During Hiring Process

    Hey,

My wife is in the application process now and passed the BA. We just found out she is pregnant. How does this effect the hiring process if she does make it through? Can you go to the school house pregnant?

    Thanks.

She can get slated for a later date. Have heard stories of women being pregnant and delivering during final evals - some babies had to be in the nicu while mom tries to eval. Hopefully that would never happen to you guys. HR is very understanding about this. Would not have a baby during this program. They can slate her for after the birth.

It will probably take a while for all of this!! I was pregnant when I applied last bid and am now just waiting for a date for the academy. My youngest is 9 months already even if I would have got the first batch of TOL's I still would have already had her by then or you can just ask for a later date. But most likely she has nothing to worry about just being with the baby when she is small. I did have a chance to go to the academy pretty much a month after she was born but even though I want this SO bad she is obviously my priority so I spent this whole year with her and will be going to the academy right after she turns 1

As a point of reference, from the March 2015 bid, there are people just now getting academy dates for December, so if the most recent bid is anything like the last, expect a potential 18 months before an academy date, and 9 months at the earliest.

There was a girl in the class after mine that was visibly pregnant. So yes, she can go to the Academy pregnant, but if she's in the later stages I wouldn't recommend it. The FAA will work with her. Then again, as others have noted, there's a very good chance the baby will be born before she ever gets a class date lol. Congrats BTW!

Kid will be starting middle school by the time you start.

With no ability to miss any class time it would be very difficulty to try and pull off. Especially at the Karter staged when there's lots of Dr's appointments

Honestly you have nothing to worry about. ATSA will be a month from now, you'll get the results approximately 1 month later, then all the background checks, medical, etc, will take another 5 months, then at the earliest shell get a date like a month later. So if she somehow managed to get everything done at the fastest pace possible, it will take around 8 months minimum.

For the 2015 bid, it closed end of March, and first people were at the academy in early October I believe, so a little over 6 months. This bid will likely take longer due to the amount of eligible applicants. I think in the first month (October) they sent around 80 people to the academy, which is like a 6% chance.

Odds are you won't be pregnant at the academy. However, you probably will need a month to recover and to get the kid old enough for daycare. The mental aspect of the academy might be tough with baby brain too.

Agreed, I think it is more of the actual mental aspect of it and having a tiny baby at home. Like I mentioned, I actually got pregnant like the week after the March 2015 bid, and won't be going to the academy till early of 2017, which is almost 2 years total from the bid date. With that being said, I COULD have went to the academy in January of this year, like a month or two after the baby was born but personally I could not leave her for 4 months after she was just born. I don't think your body or your mind is mentally prepared for that after just having a baby. Fast forward to now, she will be 1 in December and of course its going to be hard leaving both of my kids, but my heart and mind is much more at peace leaving a 1 year old home rather than a newborn

Hi All. Wife is pregnant with Twins, also considered a High Risk Pregnancy, as we are seeing a specialist. I am Background/Medically cleared, hoping on a FOL in the coming days/weeks. Anyone have any clue as to how HR will handle a scenario like this. My wife is due the end of Oct. This is obviously very sensitive for myself to be there through the birth process given the situation. Thanks!

As others have said previously check with HR about a later class date if it falls around a time that she’s due. Another thing to consider too is how good/bad your current insurance is vs what you can get as an FAA employee.

I got a FOL March of last year, my wife was pregnant at the time and was due in July. They initially offered me a class date in April but I just asked my HR rep if I could push it off to after the baby was born. They worked with me and gave me an August start date. Just talk to your HR rep when they call you to give you the FOL. Congrats on the twins! Hopefully everything goes smoothly with the delivery.
