Is the training time still around/close to 3 years for CPC at this location? Average time frame for D-Side training after entering fresh out of the academy?

Time to fully certify is 2.5-3 years depending on what area you are placed in and how soon you get to start D&R school. Usually start D side training 3-4 months after getting to the facility

I've been here since May 2016. Finished all my d sides in July. Starting radar school in November. My training was delayed for a few months due to training department scheduling. Training is good no complaints just have to deal with the different personalities. Training is difficult but you'll do fine as long as you apply yourself.

    Re: Miami Center - ZMA

This thread is crazy helpful (especially for housing recs, I can't get over the prices down there) but I still have a zillion questions... Jaraad, are you still around? Anyone else at ZMA that can fill in some blanks for me? Things like:

*Can trainees be assigned to any sector, or are there some with major staffing issues that get most of them?
*What's the washout rate looking like these days?
*How does training work those first few months? Will I be able to take spot leave to get a few long weekends away without getting way behind the curve?
*Same question for after you're allowed on the floor, is taking a three or four day 'weekend' to get away doable on a semiregular basis? I don't often do long trips, so I count on taking a bunch of short getaways each year...
*How do you get assigned your trainers, do you or they have any say in the matter?
*What's the overtime situation these days? Do trainees get put on the list as soon as they have a few positions under their belt? Are there lots of opportunities for overtime? Is any of it mandatory/scheduled?
*Is credit time a thing here? If so, how hard is it to use it?
*Any chance of an alternate work schedule here, after getting fully certified?

I'll be going down for a tour and to check out the housing situation soon, but was hoping to have something to tell my wife about our schedule in the meantime. She's not sold on moving to a place where she doesn't speak the language, it'd be nice to tell her that we'll be able to jet away for a long 'weekend' pretty regularly without screwing myself on the timeline.

You've spent a good deal of time in the Miami area, right? You can't possibly pretend you don't know what I mean. There are many areas (unfortunately, it seems, many of the more affordable but still safe areas) where English is NOT the primary language.

No matter what facility you go to, if you’re primary concern is how many days off a week you can take to leave you aren’t going to have a very good reputation starting out. No big deal? It’s a very big deal. When you get somewhere, buckle down, study, train everyday they let you, and worry about vacations when you check out. And if your girl doesn’t speak “the language” buy Rosetta Stone and take a racist anonymous course. Ridiculous reason to want to “get away”

Wow. And I thought I was the insensitive dick of this forum.

Luckily the Mar-a-Lago Club is only an hour up the coast from Miami, so after you wash out of training maybe you and your "wholesome" wife can head up there and wash dishes for the president.

Lmao if you think people down here dont speak English thats funny. Everyone speaks English except for maybe the old abuelos and abuelas in lil Havana. If they dont talk English then its because they probably already realized you're ignorant and are talking about you in Spanish. My advise, pick another facility. This beautiful area is not for you. More turquoise blue water beaches for me.

This. You can assure your wife that English is the main language.

I'm hispanic myself, I don't think the issue is her racism. She's very hard of hearing, and while she has a (very) basic grasp on the language, she is awful at reading lips when people are speaking spanish. I just don't expect it to be an easy transition for her and I'd hoped to be able to tell her that the move would open up a lot more travel than we've been able to enjoy at my current facility.

Perhaps when I'm not around people will speak english more frequently than we've experienced when we visit - and hopefully she'll get better at reading lips in spanish with time. I'm sorry to anyone I offended, it was certainly not my intent.

I promise you will not have any issues with people speaking english... but you really shouldn't worry about your "travel" until you're done with training in 2-3 years. You have 2 days off, if you want to get away do it then. You should be bidding you leave for the next year in advance so you'll have those days to travel. Besides miami is where people vacation! Rent a hotel at the beach on your days off that should be a get away in itself. South FL is awesome aside from the crowd. Where else in the states can you go to the beach in February?
