Yo. I know I hit you up on JC, but I've just been busy as hell with non-radar. My table in my living room here is covered in strips from the problems we've been running.

I did talk to the other two guys in my class about meeting up with everyone going to ZME that is in basics right now, and they were up for it.

I visited the memphis center a few weekends ago. everyone there was kick back, business as usual types. i was there on saturday so no admins probably helped for the kick back feeling (and the hawaiian shirts). ZME is in the middle of memphis and isn't in a great neighborhood. but nothing common sense and an appropriate level of situation awareness couldn't handle. obviously it fed property so it gated parking with security and all that. property is adjacent to Memphis International. not sure what their hiring status is like but I know that the memphis tower got split recently, so i would imagine that might affect the supply of controllers coming in.

don't know if this is relevant information, but it's information none-the-less. Good luck!

When I talked to a guy up there, he said it takes about 2.5-3 years to get checked out. He seemed to really like it up there.

the maps here are not hard, u will probobly be overwhelmed with them when u first see them but like i said they are not hard. the training staff are all pretty cool. they are all retired from ZME from all different areas so they know all the ins and outs of the areas. when u fisrt get here ur schedule will be mon-fri 0700-1530 for a month then whenever u hit the floor u are assigned a crew and u work that schedule. for example i'm crew 3 that schedule is thu. 1420-2220 fri. 1330-2130 sat-mon 0700-1500. once ur checked out you'll be able to work mids but till then thats ur schedule. And it shouldn't take any more than 2 1/2 years to get ghecked out, we run the new hires thru pretty quick. took me just under 2 years from the time i hit the floor.

Barty I know the feeling. I just finished non-radar today! I havent been on the boards since basics. You still around or are you in the game? I would offer some info on the enroute training but I am in the E-Ram test course and so it doesnt apply to anyone else. Glad to see some other people heading same way as I am. I toured memphis over labor day but wasnt able to get into the center. going back to check out our new apartment over the next holiday.

I'm at ZME now and just finished my Stage II class "work" yesterday. You will get four maps to draw, center high and low, and the high and low maps for the area you will be in. Center maps are nothing but airways, VORs and sector names. Area maps add in airports, intersections, special use and approach control airspace, and airway mileages (navaid to navaid). When you get to stage III, that's when they add in MEAs and MOCAs (sorry, not everything is 3000, 4000 or 5000 feet any more!) and mileage between intersections. It took me about 2.5 weeks to get through all the maps and CBIs (mainly a review, some new material) working at a fairly easy pace with a couple of days of orientation, meetings and briefings thrown in. They schedule 20 class days to work on the self-paced items, and then there are about 5 other days set aside for the aforementioned items and some A-side training in the lab (ie., they show you how to load paper into the strip printer and how to use ERIDS). So you have plenty of time to finish everything they give you to do.

Looking at the list on the wall in class, it looks like you guys will be here around the 5th of November, right?

I'm a controller at mob approach (lv 8 up down) and am looking to learn something new/ bid up and am considering enroute. Would I still go to okc for basic center stuff, or is a cpc transfer a cpc transfer and that's it? Any insight would be appreciated.

    Re: Memphis Center - ZME

Quite a few folks (usually younger, and single ones) live on Mud Island. I think it is mostly just condos and apartments so anyone looking for more space would have to go elsewhere.

Southhaven and Olive Branch are both nice places to live and the cost of living is typically lower in Mississippi than it is in Tennessee unless you want to live further out from town. One thing you will have to watch out for in Southhaven is anything between Getwell and Airways north of Goodman Rd is likely to be fairly noisy because it is right under the flight path for the airport, and most aircraft are only likely to be about 3-4k' AGL (at best, lower when they're landing north) in those areas. I looked at a house just off of Tchulahoma and the DC-10s buzzing overhead got old quick.
