    Health Care at the Academy?

Does anyone know if there is an option for health care through the FAA once you start at the Academy? If so is there a family option?

Yes health care starts as soon as you get there. You fill out all that paperwork on day one, it's a good idea to look over your options prior to getting there so you won't delay the paperwork.

Funny to read the brochures with state specific information when your really don't know which state you will be stationed.

Actually, unless it's changed since I went through, it doesn't become effective until the beginning of the first pay period after you start at the academy. So there could be a week or two in there where you're not covered if you don't extend whatever your previous coverage was.

I believe that's correct, because that is how it worked when I started my job with NARA.

Yes that is correct. It won't start until the first pay period, so it just depends on when you start in relation to pay periods. It's one of the first things you do when you get there though. There are a ton of choices, and like mentioned, many state specific ones. There's also some Blue Cross/Blue Shield Federal Employee plans that are good anywhere. Probably some others as well, but I just stuck with what I knew at the time.

BCBS is usually always a good option, may be a little more but worth it. Used them, or a version of them (Florida Blue), and haven't had any complaints.

Coverage starts on the first day of the pay period after you sign up (so sign up asap and make sure you account for a possible lapse in coverage). For me, coverage started 9 days after the first day of the academy. Family coverage is included in this, should you choose a family plan.
