I'm sure part of the push is so that they can brag about how educated the workforce is. Used to be nothing but a bunch of military vets and off-the street high school grads. Nowadays, you can't pump two squirts of caramel into a soy frap double half calf caramel latte without a degree. While older controllers often don't have any sort of degree, many who enter directly into FAA management come from government academia, with degrees in managing and basket weaving and shit. So to them, all the knuckle draggers on the control floor are a different breed and the idea of an educated workforce seems like some sort of panacea to creating air traffic utopia, I suppose.
Or maybe I need another cup of coffee today. Hold the caramel.
AF Tech School is 20 weeks and pretty much useless these days. But I digress. I'm in general agreement with you that the FAA wants to be able to say their controllers are edumacated and that was the real reason behind the CTI program. Nobody takes you seriously these days if you don't have a degree. Hell, you can't even make the SNCO ranks in the military now if you don't have at least an associates degree.

Its really ashame and disheartening to those that won't be picked up/ age out. People are saying it's a scam, maybe it is but the truth is the FAA wants more people waiting around then not having enough. People will wash out, not pass clearances or just decide I'm not interested I'll keep my current job. My Italian grandmothers biggest fear on Sunday is not having enough food for our family, so she orders a rediculous amount so there is plenty to satisfy everyone. The hiring pool is like that, better to have more than not enough. Again, I feel for the people that age out, it really sucks but this is just how it is.

It's not the FAA who turned CTI into a "scam", its the schools and mostly admissions councelors who will say anything to get you to enroll while only having the faintest of knowledge about the subject.

Like I said before, it's the Advanced Hiring Plan. If the FAA wants it, the FAA will get it. This room isn't for CTI or OTS or TOL holders. It's for people that certified.

    Re: Stall Pattern

Ya, I hear you, I don't really care OTS vs CTI but with a CTI degree, you have a much higher chance of getting hired, albeit also a much higher chance of losing a shit ton of money for nothing, hence my "it should be a minor course of study if anything" so you haven't wasted your time on a crap degree. That being said, the FAA really is to blame for what every single CTI grad is going through, because why would you entice prospective students and still hire OTS? One or the other, or guarantee slots to CTI grads. Instead they gave an operating agreement to multiple schools knowing full well they were going to have way more people than they needed.

    My butt hurts.

You're asking the wrong question. It's how many drunken nights at home alone did it take to become an epic member?

Yeah the applicant pool reasoning doesn't really fly IMHO. You put an ad on USAJOBs and maybe career builder saying "hey, come take this test, and you might get placed into a careeer field where you can make $150k a year plus at some facilities". People will be lined up down the street.
Hell, you could even put it on the internet and not have to proctor the test in person.

I know soneone in hq who kind of repeated the rumors going around these boards. What I'm still not sure about, Jamis, is how this will affect non Cti/Ots hires.

Let the buyer beware! The FAA only set up the guidelines for the program - it was the CTI schools that applied for it and then sold the snake oil.
